I never did any oil field work except to deliver pipe from Pittsburgh and pumps and air equipment.
I will take a chance on this and bet that if a driver has a bad accident and the 4 wheeler gets a half arsed good enough ambulance chaser he'll tear that "off duty" down in court and leave someone holding the losing end of a large multi dollar suit for not getting proper sleep. We all know sleeping on a board across the seats isn't going to make it past the swearing on the bible part of the trial oil field or not. I got a HOS violation years ago by sleeping on the front seat of a hot shot doing a friend a favor years ago. I know it's not the same thing but in real life it is.
We live in a law suit crazy world now and if you screw the pooch and some lawyer can tear down your "sleeping arrangement" and show any reasonable doubt then the game isn't going to be won by the trucking side of the suit.
You can all scream and swear that it's all legal and not mentioned in the FMCSA or whatever the oil field version is but we do know if it says truck, it's going to be drug into a court room and will lose to the 4 wheeler. Throw a freaking little tent and sleeping bag and pad in the truck and maybe even get a few pictures of the thing set up as "proof" that you do get stretched out on a nice comfortable pad in your bag getting quality sleep! Yes in a combat situation we can sleep in a chair or on the hood of a duce or in a hammock and even in a foxhole but this isn't combat but a different world where lawyers are tracking you so why take a chance on a "it doesn't say it for sure" line? Is the argument worth it?
Let's don't argue the point because we all know it's going to or already has happened. It's better to let your safety people tell you what you should be doing for that off duty time when we all know we need to be checking the eye lids for holes and not take a chance that could cost you in the long run when the smelly stuff hits the fan!
Besides sleeping on a board sucks big time! It's like sleeping on the floor! -
Yes you can

I have hauled many loads of nitrogen into wellsites ( halliburton,bj,universal, superior, shlumberger) we were required to log as any otr driver and had to be to a motel or in a sleeper at 14 you can not stay in a daycab ,there are size requirements for a sleeper birth...(but) if you are working for the oil or frac co. they have a totally different deal when it comes to logging I am not an expert on what they are allowed but if i remember right when they are on site they do not fall into the 14 hour guidlines I think they can go off duty when on site...I have heard many times they would 20+ hours then head to the camp or a motel but they have to have the 10 off...oilfield is a bird with different feathers, but back to the question running otr you can not sleep in a daycab..working for bj services on a wellsite and sleeeping in a daycab? may be legal with the oddball exemptions that are allowed for oilwell work( sugarcane ,propane also has some weirdo restrictions)

What I meant to say was if you are considered otr and in a daycab and you do not show home or hotel after 14 hours then yes you can get in some trouble.
