Look, I'm not trying to start a war.
WinXP ran for years on 512MB as the standard. It was not until the last 2 years when memory prises dropped did systems start to have 1GB.
Use info on this page to stop processes you don't need: blackviper.com
Unless you do something that needs a bunch of number cruching (ripping and converting music or video, 3D rendering, 3D games) you don't need 1GB.
I have a T60 running XP with 2GB and I watch the memory usage. For my day to day usage, running delorme street atlas with GPS, MS Excel, DDL, thunderbird and aircard. I barely use 768MB.
With the price of memory now, I see nothing wrong with it. But 90% of the trucker will never need it.
GuysLady, has a nice laptop for a trucker that doesn't play games. It will do everything she needs and more. She got a great deal on the memory upgrade, so there is no problem with having too much.

I run four XP computers. They all use 1 gig now because 512 was just too clunky and slow. If you don't mind waiting forever for things to load and work, yes, you can run it on 512 but I like things to run quickly and efficiently so use 1 gig. I usually have my mail up, Opera (with four to six tabs open), and MS Word. I have all unnecessary processes turned off, even more than Black Viper suggests, as I hate a lot of junk MS puts on their operating systems, including system restore, etc.
To each his/her own. I prefer 1 gig. Always will. It's much more responsive than 512. -
Open Windows Task Manager, under Physical Memory, what does Available read?

Give it a rest, Mark. I don't have to agree with you and I will not. I'm not using XP on this computer and I'm not going all over the house to answer questions for you.
1 gig makes things run smoother and quicker. Period. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. You are entitled to yours. End of story. Let it go. -
