Millis has trucks set up right, especially if you plan to live in the truck.
The pay is right and get involved in their 401K retirement and you'll be set in a few years.
Join a credit union and set up a second retirement account. You'll make enough money to do all that.
    Equipment
Millis’ fleet is one of the newest, well-maintained on the road. All power units are equipped with the latest technology to ensure timely communication and accurate tracking. Drivers enjoy added amenities to stay comfortable on the road. All trucks come with Sirius Satellite Radio, a 24” flat screen TV and a subscription to DirecTV paid for by Millis.

    • Auto shift tractors with ABS braking and traction control
    • Speed governor set at 70 mph when driver meets safety requirements
    • Summit driver comfort seat
    • Refrigerator
    • Sirius Satellite Radio, 24” flat screen and DirecTV subscription paid for by Millis
    • Crank out vent windows in sleeper with screens
    • Dash mounted radio with weather band
    • Aluminum wheels
    • Touchless 5th wheel release
    • Customized storage capacity
    • Double bunks (upper and lower)
    • Power locks and windows

A sleeper would be a lot better than being homeless.

I totally get your situation. Trucked for about 8 years, went to mechanic school for 2 and fixed transit buses for 8.

They're trying to get rid of the older guys in transit buses, and I couldn't find another mechanic job. I'm 54, and despite every garage screaming for mechanics, I couldn't get an interview. Started feeling "old and in the way". Finally got back in a truck a few months ago.

Trucking is great for guys/gals that are used to working on their own with minimal direction. You should do fine.

Help Chinatown to help you. You could do worse than Schneider, but you should explore other options, too. Good luck!!

I stopped working as a paid mechanic at 40.
Though I replaced 2 lower ball joints in my 4WD last month. Try it, its a lot of fun 8 )
Im selling everything except a suitcase of clothes and a sml box of tools.
I see this high demand for drivers as an opportunity. Ur only given so many opportunitys in life.
But at 62, do I still have what it takes. Can I drive a TT for 11-12 hrs a day and not get bored. Thats my wall.

    Chinatown and homeskillet Thank this.

These company cdl school contracts concern me also. There is no escape hatch. Its 100% commitment-no quitting, no going back. Or pay back $7k. They even have up to a 30% attorney surcharge on top of the pay back.
Though it is prorated over a portion of time using some chinese arithmetic.

In regards to hair follicle testing, they are finding out how incredibly inaccurate those are simply because the money that we touch everyday has traces of drugs. If you touch your hair then you have possibly just placed small trace amounts of residue on the hair that they do not simply test the follicle of and making the test compromised. Sad that some places still use that method.
