I think it's below some of the bigger players, but still decent. Almost any LTL will pay at least decent wages.

Lots of micro management at Saia. Driver facing camera, no Bluetooth allowed, no cb allowed. FYI.

Yes they have driver facing cameras and a very strict no cell phone policy, but you are there to work not chat away on the phone. At least Saia trucks have stereos in them unlike some of the other LTL companies. Also, Saia has a very strict no smoking policy. Violations will result in termination.

They do allow CB radios, although that is not much of a deal since no one is on the other end much anymore.

Very little micromanagement, simply don't set off the camera and you will not even have to talk to a manager, all your work comes over an app on your phone, only people you see face to face as line haul are the dock managers when you get to a terminal. Biggest pain in the arse is calling into central dispatch, most of the dispatchers are good but there is one hat is a flake. My brother can go days without even saying hi to his actual manager and has only spoken to safety a few times, mostly when he first started driving there.

You're there to work not chat on the phone? You're driving a truck. Not building a home. Talking on the phone doesn't get in the way of doing your job.
Guys that run the system and are out most of the week barely see their families and with Saia's policy drivers will barely hear from them also.

It's the biggest B.S policy in all of LTL. This is why they are hurting for drivers posting job ads everywhere.

It's no different than holding a CB. Headsets should be allowed. But we don't make the rules...

Plus, the phone can save the life of a sleepy linehaul driver. After 4am or so, we all tend to help each other out. Not having that as a resource could be dangerous.

Also, our drivers will warn each other of weather conditions, road closures, and severe backups to help keep us all moving and out of trouble. Some of us even have contacts at other carriers or based out of other cities. I've gotten helpful information that came from guys at Holland, Old Dominion, UPS, Estes, UPS Freight, FedEx Freight, etc. because former coworkers will even warn each other about road conditions they know we're headed toward.

Unfortunately, Saia linehaul drivers don't have access to that big network of drivers unless they want to risk their jobs. That's a shame.

Spot on. I can't count how many times I was dead tired with a long way to go befire I am at my destination and I end up on the phone and im all of a sudden wide awake.
You can be well rested but driving in pitch dark roads for hours and hours can still make you sleepy.

You know some pencil pusher got a huge bonus for coming up with that idea and saving Saia money. Some ahole who could care less about any of the drivers.

Are you kidding me??? Have you ever even used a CB before?

As one of the proud few LTL guys who does run a radio mine gets used every day.

Using a headset doesn't require any hands - that's my whole point. You have to use a hand to hold a mic. If one was nitpicking, companies should see that headsets are safer because you don't have to use a hand to hold a mic.
