I think we came to the same point here - make sure this engine is running to spec, and run it appropriately to make some revenue for now. Start planning/saving for a different engine a year or two down the road. Rest of the truck is in outstanding condition so this would make sense. Old School glider. Too many of these 359's have been cut up and sent to salvage. I think the truck will continue to hold it's value.

Read an article about a guy putting a N14 in a 359EXHD. He harvested a wiring harness from a 379 and it was basically bolt it in and mount the ECM. A few things to change (change tach to electronic) but most everything was straightforward. I can get 2 used N14s here locally for around $6K with 500K miles and 90 day warranty. One is a 435 and the other is a 435/500. Have it checked out and any issues worked out. If it needs it get an overhead or in-frame and it should be good for another 500K. Just thinking out loud. Looking for a good independent Cummins wrench. We can do most of the work on the install.

Truck has Rockwell SQHP axles. Can they take the new power? Trans is an Eaton Fuller 13. That may be the next weak link. 43 years old.

Now yer talkin'. An underpowered truck is like a small motorcycle, does ok, just not as much fun. As far as Rockwell rears, of the umpty -nine trucks I drove, including my own, had Rockwells. I think only a handful had Eatons. I never had a problem with Rockwells. They went 'round and 'round for millions of miles. And if they puke, which is rare, they are a dime a dozen at junk yards. Since you are generally a short haul, I'd get the biggest motor I could. Mileage, I've found is almost comparable to a small motor, because you don't have to work it as hard. Keep us posted.

buy a ratty whole truck with the n14,the tranny you want, and axles. then you have all that stuff and the wiring all in one. old beat up freightliner with that setup would be cheap.

There ain't nothing wrong with that. When my wife finishes her degree to be a shrink she wants me to devote my time to my trucks. Take em to shows and if I feel like getting under the hopper then do that. Lol
