Actually your instructor was wrong. You don't slow down at all. All slowing down does is make it harder for the person that is merging. It's not like he can read your mind, so now he has to predict if you are going to slow more, or speed up to get out of the way.
It's always best to hold your speed That way you are predictable.

    Lepton1 and 74Chris Thank this.

I'm in west Michigan and some of the worst drivers I've ever seen in my life are over there on the S.E. side of the state.

That definitely was a stupid move by that truck driver to swerve into other lanes from that merging car.

Hey thanks for the reminder to always be aware of my surroundings. I'm just a rookie driver and always appreciate advice from the veteran drivers

I did that once and the car held their speed too until the last minute then skammed on their brakes, I could hear them flying all the way back to my rear horn blowing... Lol. It was in Chicago.

He was referring to when cars ahead of me will obviously merge in front but too close to my grill now I am right on them and not enough time to stop if they brake. I slow when that happens. If they brake and I hit them its me rear ending my fault.

If they brake check you and you hit them it's on them. Go watch a few youtube videos of the car getting the citation.
You do need a dash cam likely to prove it though,

    You’re as bad as Scottie.
Are you mad at truckers that can pass a DOT physical and actually drive a truck?

Oh so your brother is the one who got me fired. Gimme his address, I'm coming to hit him.

    Haha just kidding. Good advise

A good driver wouldn't be being passed on the right...so if I'm having to pass him on the right, I'm assuming the polite, courteous, professional, and proper thing for him to do is the last thing up for consideration in his feeble little mind.

My safety director was all over the merger issue when I took my final road exam. His direction was to always be in the middle lane of the three; the lane of least resistance. He never wanted me to be in a position where I had to manage the knuckleheads who were trying to merge into the granny lane. Now, I've learned that the ungoverned truck running up my backside has nowhere to go if there's a third lane restriction. In that situation, I'll move over to the right if I can. If it's a car, I'll let it find its way around me.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

I hare to stereotype, but this morning two different goobers hogging the middle lane with nothing beside them. One a container. Both in tank tops, cigs lit and a dirty hat.
