Hello for all you experience drivers out there really big question... how was trucking back in the days ? Was it more stressful? Due to not having GPS? Did the atlas come in handy? Did maps help get the job done ? Do you prefer the old school way running paper logs and 18 speeds or automatic and elds. Ps I am 26 years old and have just 2 years already under my belt I am looking to get into tanker.

I’ll take the automatic and paper logs also. Paper logs were nice, but the DOT would write driver tickets for simple stuff like not adding up your HOS correctly every day. Then, there was no such thing as Detention pay. You could sit all day loading or unloading and not get paid anything. That’s why drivers would work that paper log book to makeup for sitting all day. You also had to get the load delivered on time no matter what happened because the company expected you to get the job done. I was told 4 late loads and your fired, or as they said 4 late loads and your just not cut out to be a trucker.

kinds hard to believe I might even be considered an old timer now but time goes by fast when your driving year after year.

The old paper atlas did work good and still does but I have not used mine in years.

I kinda miss the old days if your truck was hot or cold you just idle the engine.

Only having CB or cassette tape for music or am/fm was not so good vs today. Drivers use talk and joke more on CB at truck stops.

46 and 2-1/2 years trucking. I'm gonna go with NO ELD, paper logs, GPS for tracking miles and fuel, multiple methods for direction.

By 1994 I had a boot-box full of city maps from all over North America that I needed to organize by state and province as well as state maps which were more detailed than my atlas. The atlas was for longer distance travel planning and the state and city maps were for "last mile" planning.
Paper logs and 13/18 speed trans were great after twin sticks and no regulation.
Automatics and ELDs were great for a 40 year veteran to work out the last productive years hauling liquid and dry bulk products after flats and heavy haul.

I'm at 38 years within the last 41 years @ 64 years old.

I'd prefer the old mechanical engines with no limiters, no ELD & manual tranny. I prefer a truck GPS as long as its accurate & dependable, though I would still use multiple sources.

I'll take real air horns, sit down restaurants and Ali MacGraw in a convertible while you're at it please.

Great information ! I would of love to learn twin sticks.. I'm guessing times have changed and they discontinued them long time ago ?
