I've had this radio a while now and finally got it hooked up right, I think. The cb was supposedly peaked n tuned before I got it. It has new cobra mic and I've turned the VR4 up. According to the built in meter my swr is around 1.5 and output is good. But in actual conversation I'm not getting out very far. What should I expect out of this radio and what else can I do to get more. I'm not trying to get out TN to TX but a couple miles at least.

1.5 is pretty high. I like 'em less than .5

It's on a Mack Pinnacle. Antenna I think is a 36" firestick. It's run through the factory coax n mounted in factory spots on top of mirrors. Dual antenna's. Could that be part of hindrance? Factory crap?

Could always get the radio checked on a decent bench and make sure its performing 100% and if it is working fine as far as output then antenna system would more than likely be the problem.

You know you can't get less than 1:1. 1.5 is good, very good.

If radio checks good and I get the antenna system working max, then what should I expect out of this radio? To really get out will I need to go to a bigger radio or start adding extra stuff. Like say a linear or whatever?

If the radio has legal carrier of 4 watts and pep of 16 watts , depending on several factors, average transmit and receive range should be anywhere between 5 and 10 + miles. If you were interested in more power, good rule of thumb is that you need to increase your power 4 times to increase signal by 1 S unit on receiving station, so your next increase would be 16 watt carrier which is what a Stryker 955 is capable of and some other 10 meter export radios.

There's a good chance you don't actually have a 1.5:1 swr if you are only using the built in swr function. Your best bet is to check it with an external swr meter. As far as the 36" fiberglass antenna goes, that will usually limit your transmit and receive capabilities as half the antenna is being blocked by the cab of the truck. There's a good selection of antenna's to choose from on the market that would be much better. Also running the factory coax and antenna mount can also prove to be a weak point in the system. A separate mount and new coax is usually advised for best performance.
