What are some of the older trucks with the highest resale value? For example a w900l, you can buy a cheap one put money into it and the value will go up. What other ones can you think of?

An older hood bought cheap is a money pit that while worth saving will be too much of an investment to flip. Those who want it cant afford it. Buying one to use is different you can drive the money back out of it.

The notion that a coat of paint and some chrome magically increases the value of anything is BS. Older hoods (I'm talking 20+ years old) have pretty much depreciated as much as they ever will. You might get your original purchase price back out of it when you sell it after a few years of running it but not much more.

You'll get about whatever you put into it back out of it as long as you don't go crazy with it, make money doing it, probably not.

Peterbilt 379, Kenworth W900 are the top older models for re-sale. Freightliner Classic, Volvo 780, International 9900, and Mack all fall into the next category. Avoid "general fleet" trucks, which all have the aerodynamic hood design, automatic, light suspensions, small HP engines, no jakes, standard interiors/sleepers, and only 1 lock-up. Peterbilt 377, Kenworth T2000/T600, Freightliner Columbia/Century, Volvo 680, International 9400/9600/Prostar all have the lowest resale value.
If you're looking at re-sale on an old truck, you must also consider many other factors. Electrical issues tend to present themselves, suspension springs/bushings/shocks are worn-out, 5th wheels need rebuilding, Frame rust/cracking/swelling, Drive axles/transmission/clutch may also need work.
An old truck is a never ending money-pit. You just pick up where the last owner left off. Unless you're building a show truck (that's not used for it's intended purpose) every mile brings it closer to repair and can cost you BIG money.
That is the reason many owner-ops go with new. 1 easy and predictable payment with everything covered on warranty.
The very work/contract you have will dictate the reliability/year of truck you buy.
