After all he is a truck driver. Or wants to be and is practicing.Rideandrepair and 77fib77 Thank this. -
My best buddy I have my truck up at keeps saying I ought to sell mine and make some money on it.
If I made 15000 on it ,it wouldn't be enough for the amount of footwork I have done looking at trucks.
I had been looking primarily at Western a Stars because that is what I am famaliar with.
Wanted a Freightliner xl Classic but they are all beat and ragged being they were the Chevy Caprice Classic of semis.
Generally the 379s and 900s were taken much better care of.
Prices on them were reasonable until 9 months ago.
Now they are 30 grand for a wreck.
I'll stick with my original intact unmolested old hood.Rideandrepair and 77fib77 Thank this. -
Mine looked good,.. but had some hidden problems I over looked. I was blinded by finding a truck spec'd exactly how I wanted it. Expensive mistake.
But,.. I now have exactly what I want. I will retire with this truck in 10 yrs. Using what I learned from my Columbia,.. I applied everything I could to my KW. Been rolling with it for 1 yr now and not one single break down or problem. Its been pretty much perfect.
If you like your truck and its what you wanted,.. fix it up,.. get it how you want. Dont go into it expecting a return on your money. Do it for yourself.
Hurstblade, Rideandrepair, Highway Sailor and 6 others Thank this. -
I was looking to buy a new truck but the prices were a high and I check the values of my 2 older trucks 2006 and 2007 century class from sni I paid less 17k for each one same trucks with miles on the 800k are worth more than what I paid for them... investing 3k to get them even nicer instead of buying a emission truck
kenn2632, Rideandrepair and RaRa Thank this. -
Love to hear about what problems you ran into and what you did to improve your truck before you put it on the road .Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
The one fatal flaw was that I never test drove the truck. Yes I moved it forward about 2 ft. But the owner had no tag or insurance on the truck. With all the visuals passing inspection I took him at his word that the truck was in good mechanical shape. He originally wanted $40k,.. I got him down to $30k cash.
I had the truck towed home. The tow company had pulled the axles during the tow,.. or else I am sure the problem would have shown itself then. The truck had an 8 way locking carrier system. It was all fubar and and pretty much shot. Very expensive to repair/replace. My mechanic scored some axles from a T600 that would work perfectly,.. and they had 3.25 gears instead of the 3.55. So had all that replaced. Added a headache rack. Moved the air couplers to the front of the rack. Added LED work lights and some yellow chicken lights back there. Bought 10 new tires as I did not like the Dayton drives and Kelly Steers that it came with. Found some wiring issues under the dash and up in the upper console. Put on a new Jost sliding 5th wheel. Quarter fenders on front of the drives, KW mudflaps in the rear with the sexy girl chrome strips on the bottom to keep them from warping. New exhaust stacks,.. lots and lots of little chrome and bling bling things. Window shades etc. Made new box and step for my generator. Went with another Honda EU3000i. During testing found a fuel leak in the cross over to the tanks. Ended up replacing all of the fuel lines from the pump to the tanks. Had both tanks removed and cleaned. Found some rust spots on the frame,.. got that cleaned and taken care of. Lots and lots of little things that I felt if I didnt pay now,.. I would end up paying later kind of things.
Finally had it ready by Sept,.. but my trailer was not ready yet. Finally took delivery of my trailer in Oct. Got everything, tools, chains, straps, etc all organized. In the middle of all that I had just hired a new driver and was getting him sorted out. Went out together for 2 weeks to make sure he understood what I expected and how I operated. Then came the Elogs in Nov and we had some ups and downs over that. Mainly my fault because I was trying to dispatch him the same way I ran with out Elogs,.. and it just wasnt working. I had to rework things and figure out how to make sure he got enough sleep and still made enough money to make his transition work. Took me till the middle of January before I really got him rolling good with a system we could both work with. By March it was a well oiled machine.
Then came the issue with the transmission in my KW. Came with a 15 spd that if you didnt know any better,.. would swear it was broken. Had it looked over and nothing was wrong with it. It was just a noisy vibrating angry thing that I became to loath the more and more I had to use it. Then finally found a deal on a 13 spd and now I am much happier.
All said and done,.. I have about $60k in the truck. Rides like a dream compared to my Columbia. None of the swaying and top heavy feeling that the Columbia has. But,.. it wont turn on a dime like the Columbia does and needs a wide girth when backing into a spot.
I get a lot of thumbs up from people. 2nd week out these girls rolled up next to me,.. I dont know if she was trying to moon me or her version of twerking from a passenger seat,.. but hey,... boob flash too,.. that kinda made my day.
The other thing,.. I get a lot of people stuffing business cards into my door handle,.. brokers offering more loads, companies looking for O/O's etc. Kind of aggravating. I pull forward after fueling. Go inside to get a coffee,.. come back out and there is the business card in my door. I'm like dude,.. you could have just handed it to me in person,.. I flicked it on the ground hoping they saw me do it. Litter bug,.. yeah,.. I know.
Hursttommymonza Thanks this. -
I bought this 1998 Kenworth truck at an auction last year for less then 10,000 and striped it down and built it back.
