So, I was wondering what the oldest truck stop (still in operation, of course) y'all have been to lately.

I know the Stateline truckstop on the MO/AR line claims to have been around since 1930.

Also, in various names, the T/A in Fultonville New York is also pretty ancient, judging by the photos on the wall in their Country Pride.

Established in 1928 at the intersection of U.S. Route 66 and Route 136 in McLean, Illinois, Dixie Truckers Home is the oldest truck stop in America.

Founded by a partnership between J.P. Walters and John Geske, Dixie Truckers Home stood for southern hospitality. Walters wanted truckers to know they had a home away from home.

Fwiw, the Smithsonian Institutions display on transportation has a aerial picture of the old El Paso truckstop off of Airway and I10 taken in the 1960s.

Dicks Cafe in Las Cruces, NM was part of a truckstop on old US80 for years until they moved to their current location due to the construction of I10 which ran right over the property.

i'm wondering what trucking would have been like back in 1928.

not much populations. no paved roads. and could the trucks of them day even travel that far? specially with fueling stations so far away. and probably a top speed of 40 mph.

i know they weren't equipped for extended road trips. and living arrangements.

Is that even possible they would have to average 40 mph without any stops to go NYC to LA

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
