Omnitracs devices are manufactured similar to Apple devices: as cheap as possible with old, almost obsolete hardware. Then they are falesly advertised as "Top of the line" and "new" and marked up to an unreasonable price for the poor quality they actually are.
Note that twice this year in 2019 Omnitracs devices went down with issues due to "GPS rollovers" that occurred and no other devices or services like cell phones that work on the same data and GPS networks missed a beat. No other devices or services were effected except for Omnitracs. There is good, common-sense, reason Omnitracs was the only devices effected: the poor build quality I explained above.
Hardware doesn't have a life span. The only reason hardware stops working as it's done this time around with Omnitracs devices is when the hardware is too old for the advancements in data communication software they're designed to work with.
