It doesn't really matter if it's illegal, only if they enforce it. Like those rest areas where the sign says "2 hour parking." You just have to know where it's accepted. But only on-ramps.

"No Parking" "No Idling" "Exit Only" "Buses Only" These signs in various places mean nothing unless they mean it.

I have slept at an on-ramp in the past, but I absolutely hate it and will only do it if I simply cannot find a parking spot at a truck stop (it happens once in a while), or I am not yet at a truck stop and I don't feel I can safely get to my planned break area. (it happens once in a while).

99.9% of the time, I think there has always been somewhere to park though. I have even stopped at places where I am not loading/unloading that I am familiar with from past pickups or deliveries to sleep.

I see plenty of trucks parked on the ramps west
of phoenix on I-10.The interesting part is it's
a exit for a truck stop where most seem to park.

I live in Indiana, and a year or so back they passed a tough law about this...

So make a mental note - when in Indiana, avoid parking on the ramps!! It's a $500 fine, and unfortunately it's a money-hungry state. They see truckers as sources of revenue here. They'll ticket the hell out of you.

Stupid and unfair, of course, but when did that ever stop the government??

Yeah KC, you got that right. Used to be a great place to get a nap while passing thru the Hoosier, now I just keep on rollin' or find a wallyworld, or other customer (like Bullwinkle)

being in a day cab I prefer to nap on the top of on ramps

"top" of on ramps because if you get rearended - the driver is accellerating - less likely to get plowed.

I never nap in truckstops because - I will opnly be in there for an hour or so - and someone may need that spot to get some SLEEP... I know I will be in a motel by days end

(note to other day cabbers - BE CONSIDERATE of our OTR brothers)

I still nap in indiana - weekly sometimes several times a week....

could it be because ISP are Teamsters also? hehehhehe

nahhhh - the law is on the books - and WAS enforced heavily for a week or two.... but the idea was because guys were abusing ramps - leaving piss jugs and trash -

and guys parking way the hell down the shoulder prior to the ramps begining

Yeah, that's always a sad sight, when you see a truck parked so far from the ramp, that they are on the shoulder of the roadway. And this especially happens at the rest areas.

And latanea, one of the favorite targets of the ISP were USF Holland drivers, so I don't know, doesn't sound very brotherly, does it? ;)

Like I had said, I never had any problems finding somewhere to map (or sleep) in the Hoosier, just sometimes the most convenient place is a ramp.

revenue and how to bury the poor trucker even more. But until we stand up to it in full force, it'll just continue as usual.
