Once training is done - how long before getting a truck?

Explain 'downtime for training'. Would that be if he went to the terminal to do some kiosk stuff they require him to do in the first week? If so, he's still with a trainer and they pay by the week not the mile so he'd still get the same amount of pay.

His trainer is cool. I like him. He seems to be taking care of my husband. If all goes well he's going to recommend him for the walmart dedicated run. He also said if he brings him in in 2 weeks and they don't have a truck he'll tell them he's taking him back out again so he can still get paid. He's been training for 11 years, driving 17.

Perhaps orientation has changed some over the years. They didn't show them the kiosk really...definitely didn't let them do anything on it. Maybe not enough time with the big class they had?

i got sent to columbus to train for elogs and simulator, and a log class if they didn't give him the log class. not ever terminal gives all three. i didn't get paid for the day and half i was there. the simulator and elog class is required to take after you go solo. until you test out and go solo you cant take them. the log my class i am not sure or. i could not take all the classes on thesame day they were full. they wont plan you if you are training. i believe you have 3 months to do them. part of being new. as for the mentor keeping him on the truck. my trainer also tried that. the minute they found out i was done they planned us home to test out. like i believe i said every terminal has different orientations sorry for that. they dont pay your husband by the week they pay him by the day. every day he has to send in a mac 27. if he forgets his driver manager has to fix it. i wish you husband luck with the dedicated route, i am also dedicated and i have have been over the road for the last three weeks. i am sure the dedicated loads are going to mentors or people rated higher than me, or least thats what my dm said. every persons situation is different.

It does work out to 71.43 per day but it's essentially $500/week as long as the mac 27 is done. I know he's got to get to the terminal within a week to do some sort of test. They can't just leave him there or not give his trainer a load so I'm sure it'll be done pretty quickly so they can get back out and working (especially if trainer is under or waiting to pick up a load).

I think he already had the log book class during orientation. I know he has to do one for qualcom. Don't know about the simulator. What would that be for?

He has to do another log class after he gets released to solo, but you get four or five months to do it and can be done at a lot of different terminals. I've been solo 5 months and still haven't done the log class if that gives you an idea. The simulator he should get out of the way ASAP. It's like a video game that puts you into a ridiculously hard driving situation, you crash and the instructor tells you what to do in the real life situation. I think I had ice, a drunk in the oncoming lane swerving at me, a trash can rolling across the road and a suburban that decided right then was a good time to drive back on the road from the shoulder.

Thats exactly how it was for me, sim class when I upgraded and log class at some point, think I have until October to do it so I believe its 6 months. My sim class didn't even involve a simulator though, just watched a bunch of videos and did this computer quiz on what I had just watched. They didn't make me do the elogs yet even though I have the new qualcom, so far I have been successful at avoiding that class and terminals in general. I find them to just be depressing places with a bunch of drivers ######## about everything you can think of.

I'm still a newb around here but I don't think that az meant any harm with his original post. I have seen just about everything he has posted and he seems to be helpful and a nice guy. I think you may be taking what he said concerning note taking out of context. Seems to me peeps around here call it as they see it and I for one can respect that. Just my thoughts.

A little off topic but apparently my husband got an...ummm...interesting mentor. The guy is nice enough and seems to be doing right by him but he's very anal about certain things. Like where you put the trip papers, or where clothes go, where to wear shoes in the truck, not putting air in the seats, etc. Talks down to husband sometimes (like if he asks a question or asks the mentor to repeat something he says something smart alec). The guy has said he's bipolar and I'm pretty sure he's OCD too but he doesn't take any meds. Hopefully they can work through any issues and just get through the next 2 weeks.

I hope everything works out for him. There have been slot of horror stories on here about mentors. Everything from minor things like mentors that have you drive nothing but nights to a story where a mentor stranded a man in his truck for 3 days with no bathroom, food or water. The one constant I've seen is that swift doesn't tolerate it and will get him a new mentor if they can't get along.

There's no such thing as a perfect mentor. Mentors are human, just like the rest of us. Extreme circumstances should be objected to, but little petty annoyances are going to happen whomever he ends up with. As long as the guy is teaching him what he needs to know about Swift, and helping him refresh his driving skills, thats what counts. A little OCD can be tolerated, surely?

Well, the guy isn't teaching him anything and he hasn't driven the truck yet. As far as OCD goes - my husband got down on one knee to do something with the trailer and the guy said he needs to not do that cause he'll bring dirt in the truck. C'mon...you're a truck driver...surely you can't stay 100% clean and why can't you just clean the truck up IF it gets a little dirt in it? Tony asked for help with the kiosk today and his mentor said (while playing on the computer) "yeah, yeah, we'll do it later". I thought the whole idea was to help the driver learn things?

All I know is Tony is getting annoyed. I just hope he holds it together til Friday...cause he'll have the weekend off...and gets through one more week.

Personally I don't see why he can't just gripe to me about it and get over it.
