Many old school drivers broke their thumbs or knocked them out of joint. Hit a pothole and the steering wheel jumps a half turn. Didn't take but one time to learn to keep the thumb on the outside of the steering wheel.

So the wheel doesn't collapse allowing for equal weight distribution across the rim, delaying ones inevitable face-plant.... but that's really only applicable to @Chinatown's 'Bike for Fat Truckers' thread. Lol.

Like arms broken by the old front-crank-start engines... Fires up, bucks back, snaps your arm like a twig, and shaves the plaque off your front teeth.... and that was an unfortunate lucky fellow.

Right, but by demanding that a specific design be used in the name of safety makes all future and maybe more safer designs not become a reality. Nader had no idea 50 years ago what the advancement of materials and engineering designs would be today. As one manufacturers said, "we could make things better and safer but we can't because the laws prevent us from doing it."

Today, my 15 lb carbon fiber bike is more durable than steel at the same weight. This was not a reality 50 years ago.

Very true!! I learned that long before I could get a drivers license lol :), on a farm tractor. Drove cab overs for a long time with no power steering, left arm laying on the door after getting up to speed, keep in mind though.... Couldn't do that in states with potholes big as wheelbarrow lol. 30 years, nearly 3 million accident free miles, must have done something right. ;) I was always more comfortable holding the spoke itself to be honest, we all have our own comfort zones no matter what we do, companies with all this new tech need to figure that out. We are not robots.

Sadly, many were not taught the proper way to handle a crank. Every drilling rig we had used a crank start engine, and you started them up on the rig on your knees not standing on the ground :D. Buda, LeRoi, Waukesha, Hercules, Red Seal, many probably never seen or heard of those engines :). Oh and how about kick start Harley's??? Lol, I learned to master that on my own, after a bruised calf or 2 .

Or starting the old aircraft engines by pulling on the propeller.
