Long story, short - it hasn't gotten much better.
Schneider put him in a hotel in Charlotte and got him settled in to training. He wasn't on the roster and they didn't expect him and they blamed some recruiter for it, but the trainers there got him going. He did well in the yard and they got him with a TE. They put him in a rental car where he drove from Charlotte out to Indy and was booked into another hotel. Here's where it got weird again. The recruiter and the job ad mentioned this would be a regional run and that he would get his home time close to the house. The trainer thought that was hilarious - the run is out of Indy and that's where they were. He was told to expect that he'd end up in the job for three months before he could transfer to a different account and that he'd pretty much be living in Indy for that time period. He's still unsure on what happens next, because...
They paid for a rental car for him to drive home from Indy, where he was told to sit tight while they located a truck for him. He's just been sitting here since last weekend. He's made a dozen calls and no one returns the calls. Today, he called and everyone who can help him is on vacation. The person who answered the phone told him that they just put someone else in a truck yesterday and someone was supposed to call him yesterday too but "things got busy". He's going to try to get someone who can get him into a truck but I think he's going to start looking somewhere else, too.
So there we go. Trainers were awesome, he said. That's about it.

Tell him just to relax and wait. Seems silly to walk away now and deal with onboarding somewhere else.

Hard to say "hang in there", when he's not getting paid. One of the issues with a mega carrier, the left hand(recruiter) doesn't know what the right hand (operations) is doing. Good luck with whatever comes up.

"These are the times that try men's souls."
"...and this too, shall pass."
I forget just now where the above quotes came from -- but....given you above info, they seemed appropriate.
It's tough to put into words just how bad things are right now with the world of general freight. With that in mind -- I think any/all carriers that are heavily involved in it are suffering -- of course, some more than others.
I think your son's dilemma is (in part, at least) reflective of this anything-but-great state of freight.
With less than a month under his belt -- I am loathe to suggest he jump ship (it just won't look good, later). I see ads for Schneider driving jobs elsewhere -- so I think the freight for Schneider is indeed out there.
Note also -- your son is currently one of the "low men on the totem pole"....so that means he is very much in "prove yourself" mode. For a while -- he can expect the least desirable loads, runs...and (likely) ditto for an assigned tractor.
My first suggestion would be: for now -- stay the course, given your info above -- as I understand it.
Getting another job later -- will be easier if he can stay there for at least 12 months (& longer is of course better still).
My first 6-8 months of paychecks there sucked, as well. But I stuck it out -- I just knew that I had to "pay my dues".
Understand too....that it's tough out there right now for A LOT OF PEOPLE. Not just your son.
Recall also -- after he's been there for 6 months, he can transfer to another division within Schneider -- so he can "change jobs"....without really changing jobs (or employers). This tactic worked wonders for me.
