Lol. He's been there for over 15 years now. He was at Estes for a few years before that. I think the kid is hoping to get on with them in a few years.

Sounds kind of similar to what happened to my nephew at Swift. They promised him a regional run where he could get home twice a week, which was big for him since he just had a son. After training for 2 weeks on said regional run, his trainer was ready to send him when the script got flipped and he was assigned to a cross country run where he would only be home once a month. He said hell no and jumped ship, somehow got out of paying for his school and got a couple of local jobs home everyday. He has now settled into a heavy wrecker job and loves it.

So what is he going to be doing. Dry van or tanker?

    Eyes on the prize....

To be more specific -- once your son has been there for 6 months (& also -- with a good safety record) -- depending on the freight available at that time, he could then (theoretically) transfer over to:

    • tanker duty. It's my understanding that most loads there (but not all) are non-hazmat.
    • intermodal -- "where the rubber meets the rail". If Schneider has an intermodal terminal in your area, this would be very good experience. Some positions are home daily; others (like mine) are home weekly.
    • flatbed/conestoga -- Schneider didn't have anything like this back when I was there.
    • LTL -- Recently, I've seen Schneider ads that include a requirement for a doubles/triples endorsement. This of course would be great prep for Estes, ODFL, etc.
So....the point here being...after 6 months, a lot of other opportunities are potentially on the table. This is one of the main advantages of driving for a so-called "mega-carrier" (like Schneider).

Any/all of the above would really give his CDL resume some real shine.

It was the recruiter (actually at least 2, probably more). He was supposed to go to Carlisle the following week, just nobody told no one about nothing.

The Indy based TE is wrong. The Auroura account office staff is in Indy, and Indy based drivers run mainly out of Indy, but Auroura has a DC in York that we run out of.

The problem he had getting the truck assigned is because we have (once again) changed the process for transitioning from training to operations. Unfortunately there is no good way to do this. It's one of those things that on the surface looks simple, but once you actually understand the moving parts you begin to understand the process will be dumb no matter which way it happens. Ending training on a holiday weekend just magnified the stupidity of this particular way.

Be prepared for the next 3 weeks to suck. Everything will be hard and frustrating. It takes time to begin to understand how things work and how a driver's actions are impacting the situation, or are actually at the root of the problem. It gets easier.

Interesting - and makes a lot of sense! He got the Aurora run just barely. They wanted someone within 100 miles of Carlisle and our address is 100.3 miles. We figured he'd be running out of York. It looks figured out now. He gets the rental tomorrow but he was told he'll be driving out to Indy to get his truck and then...? He has a spot at a Flying J a couple of exits north of us to park on his home time. We figured he must be running out of PA and the Indy TE just didn't know. That guy even mentioned the PA site was a rumor so he didn't know much about it at all. Really appreciate yours and everyone else's perspective and help. Things seem much more complicated since my husband was getting on at ODFL. This is our first experience with a mega. It can be a little overwhelming.

make sure he asks if the days home are pre scheduled or if he has to put in a home time request. If it's a dedicated account probly non issue. However when I was there running regional, I learned that home time had to be requested even though their advert and recruitment said out X weeks home X days. BUT you have to request/inform them that you want them off otherwise they keep you out indefinitely.

The recruiter may not even work for Schneider. A head hunter that gets paid X dollars for every person they can get to show up for orientation comes to mind.

You are describing typical mega carrier BS. Paypal, Venmo, Zelle... send your son some money so he doesn't get desperate.
