We purchased our first truck from an individual in FL and need to get it to MI to plate it thru our company... Our company we are going to be leased on wont give us temp tag and said to get a hunters permit... I am finding I have to get a permit and fuel permit for every state from FL to MI... is this right? We are talking almost $700!! Or, I can drive the truck to TX (our home state) costing around $800 in fuel to plate in TX on our own... cost around $1700 up front plus we have to get truck inspected in TX. So, is there an easier/cheaper way of getting the truck to Michigan w/o having to buy permits for each state?
one trip or hunters permit

Just go do the transaction at the FL DMV and they'll give you an intransit tag. You won't be engaged in commerce so just bobtail to MI. This is where a OOIDA membership is so worthwhile. They can tell you the legalities and even issue a temporary liability policy for your trip.

You can get a temporary permit online from TX DMV also. They will not guarantee other states will accept it but thats how I moved my last truck from out of state here. I just got the permit, taped it in the window, put NOT FOR HIRE on the doors and rolled home. You will need insurance.

NJ does not give a temp IRP. They do issue a 'Hunters permit' to allow someone to transit from one company [assuming you had their plates & quit] to others companies while you are hunting a job...I think it was good for a set number of days so one could hunt by bobtailing around and assumes you are taking plate from your new carrier.
If FL will issue one you should be good. You also should be able to get a temp IFTA from one state to cover fuel in every state instead of getting trip fuel for each state. That's only two items instead of a dozen...Bayou_baby Thanks this. -
TX will only give permit for us to drive to TX... FL will issue a hunters permit, but they said it was only good in FL. This is very stressfull... we are thinking of just waiting til Friday night and go for it...drive at night and on the weekends. I read on here to put a "Not for hire" sign on the window, have insurance and bill of sale.

Avoid the scales! Your Mileage may vary.

Until you are leased to a carrier, it is a personal vehicle. All you need is a temp tag from Florida, and proof of insurance. Make sure there are no company logos, usdot, or mc# and roll out. You're not pulling a trailer, you are not registered to pull a trailer, therefore you are "not for hire". Forget ifta and forget trip permits. That only applies if you are involved in some sort of commerce. You only need stop at scale houses that require certain weight vehicles stop.
dannythetrucker and JPenn Thank this. -
