San Antonio is a better option if you want to live in south-central Texas IMHO. For lots of reasons I won't get into. I may be biased as I lived there for most of my life.

It's a "small town big city" with the best Mexican food in the nation once you know where to go and what to avoid.

Agreed! The traffic is easier to deal with, the mexican food is some of the best, and spurs games. I'm hoping to move back late next year.

Lynden Transport hires teams to run Alaska.
Not sure they hire in Austin, but they do hire in Houston, so maybe Austin in in the area.

Both Austin and Las Vegas had much of what I wanted, but the year round weather also played an important factor in a final decision. With children still in school and high school in the near future, that was most important in my situation. It took a few months to finalize a city though.
For example, in Henderson/Las Vegas, Coronado High School seemed to be the best choice, so we looked for neighborhoods that are zoned for that school, then zeroed in on affordable homes in those neighborhoods. Home prices have increased since we bought ours though.
University of Nevada @ Las Vegas in near and within reasonable daily commute.
There's a large, robust Chinatown in Las Vegas which is a big plus for me since my wife is Chinese.
We compared rent prices, mortgage payments, rent-to-own, condo's, houses, apartments, and decided to go with purchasing a home.
Friend of mine in Tennessee did a rent-to-own and is completely happy with it. I didn't completely rule that out, but it wasn't a high priority on a home search.
Don't know what else to say about all that. Of course, if you're a military vet, can buy a place with no down payment.
Car insurance went up $30.00 a month due to living in Las Vegas area. Property taxes are pretty low also.

I live in Austin. I see a lot of Old Dominion trucks zipping around. You are also only 3 hours from Dallas which is where I commute to once a month or so. Lots of options in Dallas too. The once a month 3 hour commute hasn’t phased me. Pretty insignificant.

If you are interested in Austin, consider the Leander/Liberty Hill area. It’s north Austin. It’s growing but as of now it’s very relaxing. Quiet, low traffic, reasonable rent/housing cost. My parents live in Liberty Hill and the only thing you can hear is cows going moo. No freeway noise or barking dogs. Lots of laid back country folks.
