Also, can you take your truck home? I live about 60 miles from Werners Lithia Springs yard.

Is the Lithia Springs, GA terminal a good terminal? Also, what type of truck will I possibly be getting? Just curious. Thanks

What would you recommend for me to check. Like, anything special that you've heard of and ran into? Any help is greatly appreciated.
-
Also, what division would you recommend? Flatbed, TCU, Dedicated, Regional or National?
-
dedicated t me is the best.Regular home time.
Check over all the mechanical stuff real good. You don't know if the truck was brought in by a driver getting a new truck,if the truck was abandonded,if the last driver got fed up with mechanical problems and just dropped it off or what is going on with the truck. -
yea basically do a detailed pretrip. mine had an air leak in it and wasnt building pressure plus other smaller misc problems.

Ok, I processed out about 3 months ago. Processing out is a more accurate term than testing out, because...it really aint testing. Your trainer should give you a road test and fill out the form on it the day you get out of training (really if you cant pass it your trainer is either being a jerk or you shouldve never been on that truck). The safety department will set you up with about 6 hours worth of CBT training, just like you did in orientation. Most of it is watching a video tellign you how to do something obvious, and then answering questions that are from that video. Please pay careful attention to the backing CBTs, while they are laughable they contain good info and honestly made me a better backer upper. If you go to terminals alot, you can get setup for these CBTs any time you are at one, and get them knocked out that way, before the day comes. A guy took us out to a truck and showed us how to do a pretrip the werner way (the 2 minute way). You have to be done with everything by 5pm or you get to spend a nite in the hotel. As soon as you are told you are processing out and get to a terminal, you are OFF your trainers truck, and the fleet assignments girl leaves at 530pm in omaha, and 5pm at other locations.....
You will process out...at whatever terminal they tell you to. They just pick one based on available loads going near terminals, doesnt matter if they have trucks there or not.
When you get the truck, you will be given a checklist to fill out and send in with a trip pack or give to fleet assignments by hand. Go over everything with a fine tooth comb, start it up, drive it around the yard and bang a few gears and make sure it drives alright and doesnt make any funny noises. Anything that is damaged that is not reported on there can be charged back to you when you return the truck, depending on what kind of mood whoever is in....If you pick the truck up at a terminal with a safety lane, i'd suggest you drag it through safety lane before you set yourself as available for a load, even if you arent forced to by the guards. They get up under there and check your brakes and things that are difficult for you to check. Catch: If they find somethign wrong, that truck will not leave the terminal until it is fixed, and it will most likely take ALLLLL DAY to get into the shop.
I have never been to Lithia Springs. Most of our terminals are alright, except for Lakeland, FL, Indianapolis, IN, and my home drop yard, Channahon, IL (i consider it a terminal because it has a werner shop, however, it really aint a terminal unless it has a safety office)
You might have to take a bus ride to pick up your truck. When i processed out in omaha, i got lucky because while they didnt have a truck for me, they had a brand new daycab that just so happened to need to be driven to a drop yard that just so happened to have a truck for me. Funny, huh? If you pick a truck up from a drop yard, expect it to be filthy....and that goes with any company
As far as what division, you are almost guaranteed to not be able to get onto flatbed. Supposedly we have 60 flatbed trucks. That seems about right, you dont see them that much really. It's very small, when they are hiring they hire out of specific areas. TCU just plain sucks. It's super easy to run a fridge (i did it with no training whatsoever, helped out on a dedicated account and hey, heres your load, oh and its a reefer!), but almost every place you deliver will be a grocery warehouse, and they are well known for treating drivers like crap. it will make you want to not drive a truck if you're a rookie. So dry van it is. As soon as you're on your trainers truck, call the recruiting 800 number and hit the button for driver placement, and talk to them about what you want to do. They can put you on waiting lists for other divisions and dedicated accounts and will send you a qualcom when its your turn to get a good job.Last edited: Jan 6, 2010
