Ontario speed limiter protest set for March 2

Just one question to anyone who supports speed limiters. In the event you happen to hit black ice / slippery road and your trailer starts to come around on you, how are you going to accelerate to pull out of a jack knife situation if you are operating at your limited speed?

I have heard people respond to this question saying " well you shouldn't be going that fast". If that is the case, then lets lower the speed limiter to 80 km/h (50 mph). Oh! same thing would happen.... It doesn't matter what speed you are going. If the trailer starts to come around, the only way to correct it is by accelerating.

Look out Jim Bradley, there are going to be more highway closures due to jack knifed tractor trailers. Safe eh?

 

I'm sorry, but you're actually being serious here? Are you really?

Are you trying to shred your credibility as someone with a meaningful and thought-out point of view?

 

The same argument has been made saying you need to accelerate if you blow a steer tire . If you know accelerating is necessary , don't drive against the limiter . The speed limit in Ontario is 100 km/h . The limiters are set at 105 km/h . Do you have a problem driving the speed limit ?

 

RG, not that I'm supporting the black ice or blown steer tire deal but you do you really think 3mph. means crap.I personaly do not like Ontarios speed limit and judging by how fast 90% of the people drive they don't either.If the government was to put the limiters on all vehicles I think you would see more opinions.IT IS ABOUT ABSOLUTE CONTROL,I think that used to be know as communism.

 

It's about Ontario government being in the pocket of the OTA . ATA tried the same thing in the U.S. but NHTSA had already funded studies that proved speed limiters increased the risk of accidents . The safest conditions are trucks going with the flow so there is less passing . If OPP enforced the speed limits and if truckers didn't speed and tailgate so much there wouldn't have been so much support for the law . While only a small percentage of truck drivers drive recklessly it's a high enough percentage to get anti-trucker laws passed .

 

Speed in itself is no issue for me. I don't run against the speed limiter nor do I believe anyone should. But, If you happen to have been running against your speed limiter while passing, merging, or whatever, that is where you have a problem.

Also, unfortunately, there are truckers out there that will be pushed against their speed limiter all the way. Whether they should or shouldn't do that is not relivent. It's reality.

My question is this, why create a law that creates an issue where there was no issue before the law?

 

I came across this blog created by a Canadian truck driver on February 8th, 2009. It doesn't matter what your arguement is in support of speed limiters, there is no arguement to support this...

 

No, I wasn't... this statement was written with sarcasm. I thought that could be seen quite easily to all...

You really have to wonder what makes someone want to play chicken with a truck.I have had this done to me and a part of me thinks they need to have thier a--s run over.In general people are always bit--n about trucks,if it is not one issue it is another.Maybe we should give alot of them what they think they want.....keep the trucks off the road (for a few days) so as not to inconvenience them give them sort of a holiday. If that could ever happen I'd like to see the looks on thier faces when they realise that they have the road all to themselves but do not have any gas to use them and it will really suck when they get hungry!

 

Just another observation but it seems that alot of the supporters of the speed limiters are company drivers.Wonder how many have never ownd thier own truck?I'm sure the few that do are leased to one of these fleets that are limited anyway.Wonder how many would go out and show thier support for this law by installing a limiter on thier car? NONE!
