I would see more of a problem with the companies that lease the truck to the driver.
The other leased drivers who own their equipment are regulated to one carrier by the FMCSA.

They walk a narrow line when it comes to representing drivers viz federal law.
They are the only representation that drivers of any stripe have in Washington - all the other parties (ATA, companies) have the catbird seat. -
I am just amazed that not one has ever questioned the legality of these types of leases. All they are really doing, is shifting the burden of repairs to the driver. -
now i was around when ooida was formed in 1973 and there was a big to do about it and over the years ive heard all kinds of things about them some good and some bad.
in truth ooida is concearned with what happens in washington they are not for the individual driver, o if you call they will give you advice good or bad you have to decide as long as it dosent cost anything but if it dosent have anything to do with what could be a class action suit dont count on anything BUT they are a #### site bettee then the ATA ther a compleat joke.
im a member because i feel ther better then nothing how ever my membership is up in january and it wont be renewed WHY simple i dont like a lie no matter who tells it and i #### sure dont like to be mislead or to see any driver mislead and ooida does lie and they do mislead.
for example they advertise that they finance trucks , they in fact do not they will refer you to a bank that they sponser well go ther and look at there credit application its the worst ive ever seen by the time you get thrue filling the thing out you owe them your first born your house ands everything else you own plus you have to have a credit score of 700 or better now with all that who needs them. and ooida has nothing to do with it unless theyget some kind of kisk back who knowes.
its mis leading and a lie i for one dont like it and wont tolerate it therefore my membership is done , i feel we have to much of that in the busines already we dont have to pay for more of it .
course that is just my humbel opinion. my best to all.---southernpride

Their #1 business seems to be filing class action lawsuits and winning millions and most members of the class get a few dollars. Can anyone show were a driver received a large sum from one of their lawsuits? Their other main business is selling insurance and services, the same ones they complain about carriers selling their lease trucks, but it is OK for OOIDA to sell the same services.(They don't like the competion)
I bailed in the early 90's when JJ put in a full page editorial supporting Bill Clinton in his first election. -
While I think there is safety in numbers, ie; the more members there are the better showing of strength there is (think NRA). I recall a couple of years back when Colo. was updating the new chain law, OOIDA and Colo. Motor Carrier Assoc. did absolutely nothing to help. CMCA testified but even that wasn't worth squat. The last thing in Colo. that I've seen OOIDA do anything about on a serious level was when the town of Vail wanted to ban the use of engine brakes on I-70 from mm 182 to mm 170.
