Here is a list of the Laws on the books as of 2013. The problem lies in the fact the officer didn't know if the cans were mty or full when put in the car. If you had had them in the truck, perhaps you could have said you were hauling trash home. Each adult in the vehicle is responsible if something like this happens. If you had a child in the car, I imagine they could have gotten you both for endangerment of a minor with todays's rules.
I know this has been a no-no for as long as I remember. I can't say I didn't take a mixed drink of some sort home from mom and dad's house, they were on the next driveway from us, but I know it was illegal.
