It's a CYA aspect, kylefitzy. If it's edge protected, except for preference, there would be nothing wrong, I guess. However, I hate having to undo my tarps just because somebody wants to make sure I used edge protection.....which is why I usually use chains for a suicide coil. The assumption being, a DOT LEO would care less if the chain was edge protected, or if the strap had edge protection that was over the tarp, being the tarp is a kind of edge protection, but if the strap going over the coil outside of the tarp is edge protected all is good, whereas he might be concerned about a strap not being edge protected that is going through the middle of the coil which is actually supposed to hold the coil immobile. The strap over the top is usually a supportive, rather than primary securement and therefore, of more concern. :)

This is a good thread for newbies.
Different securement techniques discussed and dissected.
However, all experienced drivers agree that time and space is your friend on the road.
    Look ahead, plan ahead.

    Original poster asked for advice.

Pictures of each load securement prior to tarping.
Forward those pictures to someone who has the knowledge and hands on experience to advise.

Encourage driver to make regular load checks.

    Emphasize safety over appointments.

There are so many nuanced details regards proper use and inspection of binders/chains/link alignment/spools/pockets/coil racks/lumber/friction mats/load placement/ site safety
    /personal safety etc, etc.

    It takes a village …..
