1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

If you get a $38 Logitech Webcam from Wally World (Walmart) and join a free serivce on the net called Skype it allows you to have video conference for free to any other person worldwide. With using a laptop with an wifi/aircard the quality of video may not always be great, a lttle jerky or slow if you knowwhat I mean, but overall not bad. Just make sure you have plenty of RAM 1G is best on both ends of the connections helps. Plus keep in mind with the webcam at home your spouse can make realtime videos and email them to you daily of the kids and you can do the same with your to them.

Plus you can use your webcam on the dash of the truck when you see some cool scenery and email that to the kids. Just velcro it to the dash and make some cool movies to send to the kids. Heck if you erase daily this may not be a bad idea for saftey reason to run video all the time and if nothing happens you can erase each day. I might use that espeically when the road conditions are bad to email to the company to say hey heres why I shut down.

Your biggest fear is rightly deserved. Remember to ALWAYS appreciate the sacrifices your family are about to make. Communicate and listen! Web cams and cell phone, although good, don't replace the human contact that family needs. If you loose site of what your family actually goes through without you there, there will be problems, big ones, ones that are VERY hard to solve when you come in on friday and leave again on sunday. I've been doing the OTR wife thing for 4 years, it's not easy, and I can see now why some don't make it. Put your family first - ALWAYS and don't ever loose site of why and who your doing this for.

    Hi,

This is one reason I'm sooooooo grateful to have found this site. My son and I have our own truck now, but it's staying parked until all the expenses are taken care of. We could go to the bank but both have opted to work and save up enough to take care of major expenses. Right now just insurance and registration seem major lol. I'll earn plenty in just a couple weeks again driving for a local company once my season starts usually in September or Oct. Son is driving for a local company now and saving too. We want to be sure to have plenty for breakdowns, parts etc. In the meantime I'm learning like crazy, getting paperwork in order, and trying not to be impatient!! :biggrin_25513:

Maybe consider taking a course on diesel repair while your waiting at night. This could save an O/O tons of money. My wife has a friend and her husband owns his truck. She was telling my wife that he used to do many of his repairs and maintenance in the past and now he dosen't want to do it anymore and it is starting to eat them alive because he is paying someone to change his oil and other things she feels he could do and save a bunch of money. Just a thought especially if you son and you are doing this together.
