If you're that close to home, you may be better off going home. Let them know that if they don't have a trainer for you aready, you'd like to go home since you're so close. They don't wanna keep paying the hotel bill. Not too sure about the single room during training thing. I know when I was on breakdown while in training I got my own, even at hotels where they had orientation students, but I can't say they wouldn't do it in your situation.

They might try to bus you to your trainer. That will suck. US Xpress has left people stranded at places because the student was told a cab or someone would pick them up from the bus station. Get people's direct number so that doesn't happen to you.

My orientation class....a guy from Iowa was bused to Chicago and told a cab would be waiting for him. Once he got into Chicago.... there was no cab and the recruiter couldn't be reached. He called the terminal then they sent a cab for him once it was sorted all out.....that took a long time because it turned out the recruiter scheduled him for the orientation that is on Wednesday not Monday.

That was orientation. Taking the bus to your trainer is worse. Stay on top of all of this.

Ok thanks. Just wondering but does students having to be bused to their trainers happen often? I figured I wouldn't need to wait long if at any because of the DG account I'm going on. Since you know it's fairly physically demanding and I'm assuming most drivers coming in would want something where you don't touch, or rarely touch freight.

That's exactly what happened to me meeting up with my trainer...

If you get bussed to a trainer, be ready to call the cab yourself, your cooridinator has no idea what time you'll get there. Call him a half hour before you get off the bus, they're slow. Especially if it's Markham, you'll be dropped off at a stripmall in a bad neighborhood. If you're trainer is at the terminal, ask him to pick you up, or call the guard about being picked up. Just call the receptionist on the main line and ask for who you need to talk to.

Mainly, be proactive. Don't depend on your trainer or cooridinater to help you out. They are morons and they don't care. Don't be afraid to speak up, and if you don't get a solid answer to a question, you're being blown off and you need to work on something else or be more assertive. Training sucks, just get through it and it gets a bit better. Until you're broken down...

Don't know much about their trainers, but likely just means you have a smaller pool of trainers. It's actually a lot cheaper to bus you to a trainer than to have them drive any significant distance to a terminal, so expect that. On that note, be sure that you don't bring so much stuff that you can't carry it all on you, because you will be expected to until you get your own truck.

Yea I'm only bringing 2 bags. A regular sized backpack, and one of those military bags that I bought from an Army Navy surplus store a few years ago when I was a volunteer firefighter. It held all of my turnout gear quite easily. Military bag is for clothes, backpack is for coffee mug, Tupperware container, few bags of ramen noodles, tea bags, instant coffee mix, and few other small things.

Absolutely ! Dont bring a lot of stuff otherwise your gonna have to carry it everywhere.

The last day of orientation.... you have to bring all your stufff to the terminal from the hotel. Often times, your expected to leave it in the hallway till orientation is done. Fingers crossed that no one steals your stuff.

I wish they would do a reality show about those who do Dollar General. Rookies, sleeper truck, 53 foot trailer & interesting backing......ratings gold.

I'm very anxious to see how I do on my first few trips backing. My trainer will probably be outside of the truck watching me and be thinking " what in the f#$% is he doing?!?! " so many times lol.

Just posting an update, unfortunately I had to postpone my orientation to this wednesday the 21st. I totally forgot I had to take my father to a doctors appt today that he's had scheduled for about a month now. My recruiter was cool with it when she called me asking me why I didn't show up at orientation this morning, I tried to contact somebody yesterday but never got anyone.

I also just found out that USX allows people going through orientation to drive their personal vehicle directly to the terminal in Shippensburg for each day of class. I have a family member who lives near there so I'll just stay with them during the night and drive myself over to and from the terminal. I originally thought you had to stay at the hotel and use the shuttle. I had to google search where the terminal is because it's not on the street that it says in the orientation packet email. Email says fayette st, but if you search google it comes up on 1069 Seibert Ave.

Hold on there, you're missing some vital info. Orientation at shippensburg is offsite. It's half a mile away in a shopping plaza, next to a papa John's.
