Hello all, I am in need of some advice. I finished school in May and obtained my CDL A . I signed on with a medium sized flat bed carrier the end of May and asked for a start date of July 10th. They said yes good to go. Filled all paperwork etc… several calls from them asking ‘hey , are you ready to roll July 10th, just checking in on you, ‘ etc …
Today , July 3rd , I get a call saying ‘ Hello, the orientation for July 10th is full, we need to move you to the next week. We will call with travel information’

Since I was visiting family before I headed over the road, I was in shock, didn’t know what to say, and I say “ okay “ . Now I’m sitting here confused, kinda bummed and feeling this was a red flag for me . I have 2 other offers on the table but neither seem as ‘good’ as this one but maybe they could work out . The main problem is being unemployed with no pay for another week and what if I get moved back again ? Sounds not right to me.

Yeah, kinda a red flag. If you can though, give it another week. Be looking at other jobs in the meantime. Maybe one of those on your other threads. Flatbed is what you want though, right?

I chose this company for some other reasons it just happens to be flatbed. I am used to hard work and don’t mind it but yeh I chose this company due to a few other reasons like hometime , rider policies, training and pay.
I appreciate the advice Chinatown. I wonder if they had a small class this week due to the holiday or someone just dropped the ball.

Don't know. Maybe the orientation wasn't coordinated correctly and too many people scheduled. Seems like they could have squeezed in one more person though.

Could be. I was worried maybe they had a hire freeze or not enough freight/ too many drivers scenario too. One more week will not break the bank and may be okay in the long term.

It's tough being unemployed and facing this. If at all possible give it another week. It's the job you want, so hope you can do that.

    MSWS and Prstone50 Thank this.

I wouldn't give up on them. Chances are at least one person won't show up for orientation, hopefully if that happens they will call you and get you in.

This happens and it isn't a big deal. If you don't understand why now, you may later on when you get on the road and see how things work.

I had to move interviews all around, delayed a few for a couple of weeks, and had a couple cry about it, I told them too bad hiring and orientation aren't a priority, so making sure the trucks are rolling is.

July is vacation month for many small fleets, this is why things don't get done.

What if you got run over a bus on the the first day of orientation had it been when you expected? If you did the research and this company is a good fit for you, wait for the next class. So you are willing to assume things would work out at the 2 other offers you have but only willing to assume the worst at the current offer because they put you off for a week? I understand getting nervous and second-guessing decisions, that's my curse as well. You can deliver pizzas or work locally if you need money.
