OTR for the first time.

So after about 3 weeks of being turned down for local jobs due to lack of experience, I’m considering 6-12 months of OTR. It’s a last resort for me. I don’t know I’m it’s a common thing or not, but the idea of it scares me a bit. Don’t know why. Literally no idea. I know if I do it it’s only going to be for that amount of time. So the main question here is is this normal? And how are some ways to get past it and make some $&@ing money before I drive myself into debt ‍♂️

 

What about OTR scares you so much?

 

Always a little fear of the unknown ,not knowing what to expect give it a few weeks you’ll be fine you’ll settle right in.

What's so scary? My truck is my rolling apt. I spend 5 nights a week in my truck.

 

Don’t really know. I know that I haven’t really gone far from the house for long for one. My experience with former trainers at a scumbag company. And I’ve had my CDL for 5 years and drive for like 3-4 months at a time. Same company stupid mistake I know. Idk I don’t feel that confident in my skills. I’m not sure what the main thing is. I guess just being young and I know I’ll be gone and miss out on a bunch of **** for a little money. But I guess 6-12 months won’t be that bad. It’s not a permanent situation. For me at least.

I’ve done 5 nights running in my home state. However the company I’m looking to to is like 21 out and 2 home. Idk...maybe I’m over thinking this

 

I still have anxiety whenever I go to a new place. Trip planning will help reassure you. Use Google satellite view so you have an idea of the place and its surroundings. Never rush, always take your time. Ask questions. Get out and look. Don't pretend your a super trucker. It's okay to be a newbie. Nobody came out of the womb clenching a CDL in their baby hands.

 

Thank you. I think I can shift, turn and drive straight pretty #### well. Backing gets me every time lol I think 90% of the backs I have done I’ve been pissed off by the time I finally got it right. Lol

 

Getting a year or so otr is good experience. Not just driving experience but life experience, whether you choose to stick with it or not. If you go at it with an open mind then you will learn a lot and really broaden your horizons.

I only did one year of otr. I don’t ever want to do it again, but I’m so glad I did it. For the past 7 years I have done various types of local driving. I had to go through a handful of companies and pulled a variety of trailers before I found what I really want to do and settled down where I am now, but I can honestly say I have no regrets.
