I appreciate all the comments, and will take them all into consideration. It does sound like as far as learning, and gaining experience, Swift would be the way to go. Driving the same 40 mile route every day of the week won't provide too much variation to teach me a lot. OTR will put me in all sorts of situations, and over all sorts of terrain/conditions I don't find here in FL. The uncertainty of pay, and being away from home is something I need to consider as well. I guess I just need to sleep on it, and go with my instincts. I'm glad you all allowed me to think out loud, and ask for some advice. Thanks!

Go and talk to the other contractor drivers before making a selection,Swift sucks but you will get experience and after a year you can move up for a better job,and think most of the contractor dont pay much and you probably dont have any benefits, sounds to nice to be true.

This is correct. No benefits, and no guarantee for a promotion to make more money down the road. My only thought is that an OTR job will always be there if this doesn't work out. Getting on board with a mail contractor is not an everyday job offer. It's crazy, I have to meet the owner in two hours, and I still don't know what I should do.

Accept it, or if you don't you'll be wishing you would have. It pays you by the hour for ALL your time and racks up experience for a better mail run in the future.

Not excellent money to start off but working for the government has a lot of other perks. The benefit would probably be very good and if you stick with it your retirement would surely make up for the little start off pay.

Tough decision. Personally if I were in your position and driving was just a temporary thing then maybe over the road would be the way to go. Unless you pay up front for your school though you will have to sign a year contract with Swift for schooling. Maybe weigh out your long term goals and see if its worth it.

Well, I met with the owner today, and declined the offer. I based my decision on the fact that driving for Swift will give me a lot more experience in various conditions, and most likely better pay. Having the OTR experience will also open doors for me if I decide to pursue a different avenue down the road, like oilfield driving which is where I want to end up. Also, Swift offers full benefits, which I need. So there you have it. I hope I made the right decision. Orientation starts Tuesday! Thanks again to everyone for their advice.

actually, most local places dont care how much OTR you have and most OTR dont care how much local you have. was this for a sub carrier or the actualy post office? either way with 4 hours a day that is more then enough room to make some phone calls and do some other dump/tanker/drop and hook work.

I averaged $750 a week my first year. And that was at a regional position which did not give major miles...
