Well you are near Chicago right? Chicago is one of the biggest if not THE biggest city in the world for rail freight. I drop a lot of containers in PA that are headed for Chicago, Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Wheaton.

With the price of Diesel only headed up rail freight is where all the growth is. We got all the work we can imagine and wind up subbing a lot of the work out since we are unable to keep up with demand. The money ain't bad either. If I work Saturdays I can pull in $1400/wk as a company driver. Not too bad for a home everyday job.

With 20 years in I would think if you really wanted to be home you could find something.

good point. its all produce from here to watsonsville to salinas and to castroville. any ideas on companies that would hire a rookie? i noticed that central refrigerated and cr england have yards in salinas but i wanna avoid mega carriers and stay local. im more concerned with experience. my rent is relatively low and i enjoy stepping outside every morning to cannery row and the bay in my front yard :biggrin_255: i would rather make a little less and just haul locally but i find it may be impossible without experience.

You need to make some calls, do some research, a few places around me will hire newbis, but most will not they want some kind of experience, which buy the way ain't a bad thing. Take it from me I have been there myself, and so have alot us,when you take that first job and get out you will realize how little you realy know about driving a truck.

Yes, i consider you to be very lucky to live in a beautiful area like that with great year round weather. Friday nights we usually cruised around cannery row and then up to salinas. What about trying some local LTL outfits or Beverage delivery. There must be something in Salinas, Seaside or Marina?

I have noticed two beer distributors based out of Watsonville but they require experience. Seems most large companies around here want experience. I would be fine driving a dump truck locally. I may need to just go OTR for a year then come home. What's a year? That ain't bad.
