Swift has probably dozens of different "fleets" that are primarily defined by geographic regions and including a "48 state fleet". This fleet is basically used as a "roaming fleet" to get assets to areas where more assets are needed as freight shifts through various cycles. Freight is very cyclical from region to region and from quarter to quarter. As a 48 state OTR driver at a large nationwide carrier, one thing that will be consistent is inconsistency and unreliability in freight lane expectancies.
But I recommend ALL new drivers [who seriously consider trucking a long term career] jump in "the deep end" and start "classic 48 OTR". This lets you see the nation, the different weather and terrains, all the major cities, and create a nice beginning employment block on their resume.
OTR Question, will they eventually keep me regional?
