As long as you aren't trying to log sleeper berth, there isn't anything the DOT can do. They can't put you OOS for not having motel receipts because the regulations do not REQUIRE you to have them. In fact, the regs don't say a darn thing about where you take your break, only what is required in order to be considered a sleeper berth. You can stay with friends/family. You might stay at a terminal. Maybe you slept on a park bench. Doesn't matter as long as you were off duty for 10 hours.
The only reason you need motel receipts is if the company is going to reimburse or to write off the expense on your taxes...NOT to satisfy the DOT. I've never been asked for a receipt, and quite honestly wouldn't show them one if they DID ask for it...unless THEY were going to reimburse that expense for me.nitetride379x, brian991219, double yellow and 3 others Thank this. -
Good points guys. It's good to know that here are/were people doing this.

My cdl instructor ran otr in a day cab in the 70's. He would just set up a hammock under the trailer and log off duty.
DesiTrucker Thanks this. -
The dot will bust the log trucks around here every now and then when they catch a bunch sleeping out side the mill, waiting for it to open.

Are they in a "no parking" area? If not, DOT has no authority to harass them while legally parked and "off duty". If local, they wouldn't need log books or any other documentation with them showing what time they started or what their duty status is at that time. Seeing as how there is no law against getting an early start (so long as they've had their 10 hour break before coming on duty), DOT wouldn't have a leg to stand on in that case.

When they started most guys didn't know any better and thought they were good because they stayed in the 150mile radus. So they didn't keep logs. In one case the dot had taken pics. the night before of the truck there. And when asked most drivers would say they had spent all week in truck or loaded some where out of the 150 radius.
They do it to us gran haulers also. Wake you up to check log book or papers. looking for guys hauling for hire with farm tags, ect. And you better believe the guy behind you will rat you out.
At my last audit the inspector wanted logs. Didn't have any because we ran local. He wanted to go though my fuel receipts. To try and catch us out side of 150. He also said that if we run local and claimed the driver was home every night. I needed a log sheet at shop for driver to sign in and out on. Meaning truck had to come back to shop every night. But the driver takes truck home I said. In that case I have no way to prove when hes on or off duty. And if the driver washes or greases truck at home on weekend have to show that as on duty time. LOL. We now run all over the place so run log books. Even local. And have sleeper trucks, cheaper than day cabs.
Wasn't saying you cant do it. Just be ready for the questions. It would be easier otr running logs. -

You can log off duty just not sleeper as you obviously don’t have one.
I don’t even like doing local work in a day cab though never mind living in one for a week….
