Years ago, well before I ever thought about driving, I dated a girl who would go OTR with her grandpa and she always talked about it and she really loved it. I thought this could be an experience that we would have fond memories of.]
It's coming down to my only other choice being dropping her off with my parents but the thought of seeing my daughter ever few months breaks my heart. -
No. I was never an O/O. Always a company driver.

I am taking it you are new to trucking. Or been out a good while and needed training. The years ago you speak of with this girl you dated. Well; that was then. This is now. This is not the same trucking as back then. I would hate for my kid to hear and see how today's drivers act. Between the bickering and all about me drivers out there; you might not find many fond memories to share.

Picture your daughter asking. Daddy why is that man peeing on the fuel pump...

Its just that I have been there, done that and seen the results both ways. I was busy at work while my oldest ( 33)the daughter (27)next down were growing up. They both turned out to be real good kids, but I did not get to share in the growing process.
My Son (22) and his little sister (17) I have made it an issue to never miss a game, open house, or school band performance. I have had issues with dispatchers, and managers, I have flown home to keep date made with or for my kids. I believe it has made a difference in not only my life but more important theirs. When they see that their parents are at the game, or performance you can see it in there eyes. Makes them feel important as it should because they are. And we don't get 2 shots at this stuff called life.American-Trucker Thanks this. -
This question is a joke - right? Having a child grow up, go to school, LIVE in a truck cab? Thats a sucky existance if you ask me (MY opinion).
Also, I'm not sure of the "prerequisites", if any, are required for a parent to home school a child; but there should be. In my opinion, having a high school diploma makes you no authority to be teaching reading, science, mathematics to a child.
Granted, I know you "gotta do what you gotta do" to get by - but that is a dis-service to a child.cheyennne Thanks this. -
i rode with my dad as a kid, usually a few times in the summer and after a few days it got really boring, most of the time there is no time to do fun things because my dad still had a job to do,
Plus a lot of the places didn't allow kids in their yards so I had to hide in the bunk, sometimes for hours.
I think you are dreaming if you think your dispachers are always going to get you time off in fun places,
I personally wouldn't do it to a kid, once in a while is fine, but all the time in the truck I wouldn't do, kids need to be out having fun with other kids they don't want to be cooped up in a truck all the time. -
Thanks for all the replies and helpful advice. I hope I get to meet people like you all out on the road.
I think you all have a good point and a great prospective that I need. I think I'll go to the truck driving school, after I have a better feeling for the road, I'll see how she likes it on a few small trips.
As far as the education part goes I'm not worried, she's been in the advanced class for the last 4 years and she's still not being challenged at school. I think between me and the programs offered on line she would truly be better off. However , I would be concerned about her social life, she's such a social butterfly.
Ideally I would like to have a local job for sure, for me and my daughter's sake. I don't plan on staying single forever.

In almost all cases home schooled children far out test children in public schools and private alike! The one on one learning is far superior.
And no it's not a joke. Me and my daughter lived in some rough situations small and cramped but always made the best out of it. Once I got a wild hair and I bought a 24' motor home that we lived in with two other kids and my girlfriend and we traveled across the country stopping for a few weeks at a time to do construction jobs. We loved it and living in such tight quarters only made us closer. Sure there were some times when it seemed impossible to get some quite or time alone and one of the kids seem to always be in need but that's one of the beauties of being a family, we're together, happy and we found a way to make it work.
