New tires are often 're-moulded'; the only thing they can't change is the DOT number that identifies the maker. Used to be you could get a number lost and read that the J C Penny car tires were made by Kelly Springfield...if they can re-make a vulcanized tire they can vulcanize a cap on the same way...the contact portion of a tire or tube patch is uncured rubber & all you did was scuff the vulcanized tire or tube surface and glue them on...same idea.

They're not going to outlaw caps. This just more trucker BS. This crap comes from people who have no idea about anything other than what they see from their drivers seat. They have no concept of the number of tires recapped each year. These same guys complain about the price of fuel, apparently they don't know tires use a lot of oil. They also don't like paying $500+ for new virgin tires, just imagine what they would cost if caps were outlawed and demand went way up. Tires are already hard to get unless you want Chinese junk.

All of the abuse that drivers take from supermegacarrierfleet companies would pale in comparison to walking out to your truck and seeing a re-cap on the front axle.

    What would you do?

Thank dog most insurance companies saw the writing on the wall and said they would not honor any claim involving re-capped steers.

You shop/maintenance/purchasing guys keep preaching to the newbs how re-caps are just as good as virgins. My wife just spent $2000 running over MY PROOF that you are wrong!

Oh I am not saying I would....that's the one place I wouldn't run one. I know some companies that would though if they were given the chance. One company I know bought 10 new trailers and sold the tires off that came on them just to run cheaper recaps.

What's funny about this is if you don't want to run them......don't! But nooooo truckers want to dictate what everyone else should do.
