There is nothing wrong with running a new engine empty, the rings ability to "seal" is not affected in any way; I would be far more concerned that the mechanic who rebuilt my engine is believing and repeating that old wives tale.

That engine should have seen the Dyno immediately after the rebuild.
jamespmack and Tombstone69 Thank this. -
I have never had any of mine on a dyno after an inframe?
I have heard all kinds of break in tales. I even knew one guy that would let his sit at high idle for several days following an inframe.
I always just ran mine like I always do, and have never once had a problem with the rings not seating.jamespmack, Bean Jr., Joetro and 1 other person Thank this. -

How do engines get broke in on new trucks?

These are just enduring tall tales that persist because so few have actually inframed an engine personally, new trucks get delivered and go to work with drivers who drive them the same way the first 1000 miles as they do the last 1000 miles before they are traded in; any issues that arise after a rebuild have nothing to do with driving too many empty miles in the beginning -
Reminds me of Bob Dylan's song: Most Likely You Go Your Way
A classic for sure. -
