What is shown is a plate reading camera. Their could be other sensors associated with the camera but what you see it the camera. Their could also be a Prepass, Norpass, Opass transponder near that camera but that is not it.

When you see that camera there is likely several sensors that measure speed, weight, length, wheel spacing, heat of the brakes, associated with it the truck has just passed. That same truck that was just measured is now getting a high resolution photo taken of his license plate. This will correspond with the high resolution photo of the truck door that is taken from the side. All this information will go to a plate reader and the truck and company information will be on the computer sitting in front of the weight cop before the truck reaches the scale exit. The weight cop then can determine what he wants to do with the truck or driver or can let the computer decide for him what to do.

That pic in the op is a pre pass transponder. It talks to the transponder in my truck. The cameras are square.....

The in cab pre pass has the company dot data for the truck and that is it....you might want to fact check your post.

Optical readers are used at different points on the exit ramp leading to the inspection station.

    Here is the issue.
This particular scanner, while it looks like the kind that the prepass uses, is located in Milton ONTARIO CANADA where we do not have any kind of prepass. Our scales here always do the opening and closing system. The only transponders for trucks here are for the 407 toll road or the new toll road going around Montreal. Most trucks do not have any transponders for this purpose. There are NO other cameras as posted in post 34, no measuring devices, no plate in the road for high speed weighing, nothing looking for overheating brakes or other parts, there isn't squat. Those things are all out there by their lonesome.

That is the issue. What are they really for, then?

Not that its important, pointed down like that it is obvious it is a camera. Cameras come and a variety of shapes.

Not disagreeing that the dot uses cameras....and they come in all shapes and sizes. Even tag readers in some states....according to Pre Pass. But the device in original picture activates the windshield transceiver on my truck unless turned off. After using Pre pass for over ten years, it is very clear it is not a camera.

Is this something similar to all those things they recently put up on the Masspike?
