I prefer having my permits in hand before I get to any port of entry. It helps to know if there could be a problem such as routing.

I'm ordering my KY and TN permits tomorrow once I have the shipper verify it is ONLY 10' wide. I'll order the Rest once I get there and take my own measurements. I will have all my permits in hand before entering ANY state.

Here's a question tho, if I already have my permits and I get a by-pass light on my Prepass, do I need to still go into the POE for NM and AZ??? Obviously if the signs say "All permit loads must enter scales" I would go in, but I don't head west that much and did not know if they had those there.

Regardless of Prepass signals, or the road signs that can say you can bypass scales, you have to enter any open POE or scale with a permit load.
P's me off when I haev my permit etc, get a green light, then still have to go into the scale....

They wanted us to do just that a couple of years ago.............with loaded blade trailers! Hmmm, 160' long and a nice U turn to "pull round back". Idiots.

Well after taking axle measurements again today with some help, I came up with these numbers:

    1-2= 19' 5"
    2-3= 4' 3"
    3-4= 29' 6"
    4-5= 10' 2"

    Overall= 70'

If it's legal weight, you wont need axle spacings in those states IIRC.
SD is the only one I regularly go to where they want spacings, regardless of weight, for any permit load.
Must have a semi short bus like I do...
17'1"-4'4"-37'1"-4'2". 71' O/V with the kingpin in the front hole.
Sad when I can remember those numbers but not my anniversary huh?:biggrin_25526:

Well Comdata told me that KY wants axle spacings no matter what the weight but that was the only one.

Either way it's good to have them I guess.

SHC if someone hasnt said it already makes sure to read over each permit before entering that state its for at least a couple of times. It will help you catch anything you might have missed the first time you look it over. Pay close attention to all of the details and your routing and it will help keep ya outta trouble.

I dont have a scale prepass so I have to go into an open scale regardless and your permit (or signs going into scale) will give you specific info about scalehouses. Truthfully I would ignore the prepass if you have one and go into each open scale. One place that is goofy with OD permits is wyoming but of course they are goofy with everything anyway, lol

Most states want you to pull into the scale to check your permit even if you are given the bypass unless they are closed. In any case, it is best to stop and show them the permit just to be on the safe side. Some will just wave you through, while others will want to look over your permit.
