I have hauled oversize in Ohio for 17 plus years and this subject always comes up, it 53' period load or trailer. They don't care about overhang either front or rear. Anything over 53' requires a permit, the blanket only covers width. They will not issue a blanket for length I have tried, every time I go out with my fourth axle pinned on I'm over length, I just bootleg it but I'm on borrowed time the right DOT cop will catch it. You are not required to flag the overhang so long as your under 53' regardless of amount. I always flag it anyway, even if though its legal that doesn't mean a cop who doesn't know won't stop you and question it. I figure the time it takes to throw a couple of flags on is better than standing on the side of the road trying to explain.
