Dayyum, that's been a WHILE. Can't remember the name of the outfit that makes the machines, but I remember when they were first developing and testing their machines they used the Lower Town Wall in Index, WA. Really pissed off us rock climbers. That was back in the '80's.

My dad and old high school friends live about 80 miles south of Seattle and I am hearing from them that they are talking abut abandoning the project. Seems that the dirt above the tunnel is sinking.

A multi mile tunnel on the waterfront in a combination of ancient glacier moraine gravel, clay, and boulders...
... what could possibly go wrong?cnsper, passingthru69 and macavoy Thank this. -
Maybe that's one of the reasons they allow pot smoking. Calm the natives during rush hour. What a mess that region is all day long.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Just like putting a vibrator in poured concrete or a bucket of mixed stone, sand. Some settling will happen.
Thanks ,well paid engineers for the ability to project this happening.not.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Yeah, I forget to mention the liquifation during earthquakes. The entire SODO district is in a liquifaction zone. That loose clay, gravel, and sand turns to liquid during an earthquake. There's a fault that runs right under the proposed tunnel. It's been almost six years since I lived in Seattle. Did they tear down the Alaska Way Viaduct already? If so, and if they won't build the tunnel, the waterfront is screwed.

REALLY good article. I've been through a few earthquakes. They certainly get your attention. Fortunately I was always on solid (if shaking) ground. There's nothing like "surfing the earth" and seeing waves roll across the back 40. I was seven the first time.
Now I live in the most active earthquake region of the country: Oklahoma. Go figure. -
I appreciate the offer.
