I ran a load of 12' wide plate to Eagle Pass a few months back. Arkansas routed me around the construction on 40 like they always do, but it was a different route than usual and I wound up comming to a 11' wide bridge that turned out to be 3 miles long (over some lowlands) so i had to stop and call the local Sheriff's Dept to come escort me across. The officer couldn't believe I was routed that way and they did help me across....thankfully. I lucked out and since I had a FB I was able to get the plates over the top of the concrete wall with about a foot to spare. If it had been on a SD, I'd have had to back up about 12 miles to a place i could have turned around :(

Smart move on your part to call, a shame these permits need to be paid for.

I have no problems calling the local authorities when needed. I was legal and the route told me to go that way, so I did nothing wrong. I've also called local dept's before when I've turned down a wrong road to get ot a shipper. Instead of backing across 4 lanes of traffic, I figured it was easier to call them and have them block it for me. Which they glady did and thanked me for doing it. The officer said "I'd rather come block traffic for 5 min then sit for 3 hours writting out a accident report" which was my thinking exactly too ;)
