You get used to it. While it's not the Million Dollar highway, Loveland gets interesting in the winter when it's really hard to tell exactly where the snow-covered road ends and snowpacked oblivion begins. Throw in the empty gashaulers coming down, who often aren't real concerned with lane discipline, and the "I'm in a hurry" ski traffic, and it's not a fun few miles.

If you have 60 loads going there , I’d recommend you to drive it yourself and check it out , before you send 60 trucks on whatever route .

I don't remember if you said where your conning in from, but be aware there's a major project with big traffic delays in US50 just west of Blue Mesa Reservoir. 70' length limit, too.

    From an early post:

    550 - 62 - 145 into “To hell I ride”

    97’ overall - 11’6W 14’T - legal weight on 6 axles.

I think Blair may be on the road to get loaded with the first load now.

Oh, my mistake. Hopefully Blair will check in tonight. He may already have his Colorado permit, which hopefully takes that into account.

coming down from the north. Picking up 550 out of Grand Junction would be my guess.

Yep. At that time, I had not been that route. The Carrier's Almanac at that time, said it was a Truck Route, and it was the shortest (distance wise, not time, I found out) between the two points. So I did it. Like I said, whoever wrote those notes that also said the route south of that on US 550 into Albuquerque, NM wasn't...should be hoisted up a mast. :)

I white knuckled it the whole way and I was empty. I met one of the tanker guys on the CB, that they wrote that story about for the Million Dollar Highway route in some documentary. Helped me calm down by telling me I had already passed the worst of it (Going from Ouray south to where we met) as he was going the opposite direction on the side with mountain on it. :)

ROFLMAO.....It was purely done because of ignorance and necessity, not bravado. :) .

I didn't know going in, and once on it, I couldn't turn around and get out. :(

You ain't the only one. I was told by a boy who grew up in Montrose to go through telluride instead of 550, and when he found out I had done that before he laughed. One of my old dispatchers back where I used to work, solid dude we got along great.

And then they started sending me for all the mountain runs because I didn't die. And "we ain't going to send the rookies that way."
