NC switched there system over about a month ago. Im now able to go online and order my own permits from the state. Before last month, the computer operating system requirements were pre-2004 and I wasn't able to. The routing has been horrible, On a 120k load this week, they had me going 85 south, get off an exit, turn left, then get back on 85 going north and do the same thing at the next exit to come back south......

Also last week NC said if you were under 12 wide, 13'6 tall and under 112k lbs, just go ahead and run w/out a permit. They were so far backlogged they couldnt issue permits. (this was for last week only)

I’ve had colorado and Kentucky both route me in circles before. Colorado wanted me to go through the SB scale, flip at the next exit, hit the NB scale, flip and hit the SB scale again. Sounded like a whole bunch of things that weren’t going to happen.

Florida routed me up the A1A from Jacksonville. I called them and they said their system is automated and is essentially outdated and ####ed up. They supposed to be upgrading next month.

That’s absurd. I just came from there but I’m only 90k gross. I went 95 all the way

A couple years ago, a load in va. Was supposed to be 120k , so with 55k empty ( tri / quad ) and permit in hand with max weight available, off I go. However, i took a set of portable scales with me, after loading I weighed, guess what? The load was 135 k, now the permit was useless, and needed to reconfigure and repermit. Ended up tandem / tandem Jeep / quad and 212 k permit , first permit $450 , second permit $650 , plus knowing I was right and not having to sweat the trip was well worth it. I don’t leave anything to chance in va. The fine ( if caught) was going to be well more than the second permit and reconfiguring plus all the sweat.

I always pad the true weight and size a bit on permits.

Truck is sitting on something, and now it measures an inch taller, or you picked up mud, snow, full fuel tanks on the machine and your truck, or bucket is heavy duty and larger than expected, and so it weighs more than predicted.

If I measure it at 14'6 i permit it 14'7 , and if i expect to gross 220,000 lbs, i permit it for 225,000 to cover my ###.

Tell me about the portable scales you carried with you. That might be something I could use.
