Sorry to hear (read?) this. I scale every load I get that goes over 28,000 or more just to make sure the trailer isn't loaded nose or tail heavy. This has saved me at least a dozen times in this last year alone. I will also scale if the rig feels heavier than the paperwork states.

12,000 Steers
34,000 Drives
34,000 Tandems
______
80,000 Total Maximum Gross Weight Allowed

There is also an additional 400 pound allowance IF you have an APU.

I am afraid the Overweight ticket is going to be your problem. I would suggest speaking to an attorney that is a trucking specialist before you get to court, you can find ads for them in the Trucker newspaper and a lot of the magazines available in the truck stops.

Hope this helps and drive safe. Don't forget the no handheld phone law went into effect nationwide 01/03/12, be sure to use your bluetooth.

Those tandems must have been slid all the way forward. I always set mine to the 15th hole (ex Western Express Hyundai dry box)which 99% of the time works as long as its not a 40k+ load loaded all the way to the back.

I hate having them all the way forward, makes it harder to back up.

If the OP had this option that 5,100# ticket wouldn't have existed!:biggrin_25522:

if the ticket has your name on it, it is yours! And not only will your trainer NOT pay it, but by not paying it, then YOUR license will get suspended, and the trainer won't care about that either.

Hope you got some lube, dude, because it's about to get interesting for you...

And your trainer...well...doesn't sound like much of a trainer. sleeping while you drive, not doing his inspections...not knowing if his headlight was working or not...hell, you'd be better off just being stuck out there alone...

That's a waste in my opinion... Max trailer weight is 34k like you said. empty axle weight for an average dryvan trailer is like 9-10k iirc. So if you "could" get all weight directly over that axle when you have a load of 28k then thats a 38k weight on that axle. Which wouldn't be very possible on most loads.

I usually only scaled loads above 36k but mostly only scaled loads above 40k. Depends on the load, if I seen how it was loaded, what the product was, etc...

But that's me... everyone has their own things they do. Now I don't need to worry about those things :D

Got an overweight ticket in CAli while with a trainer. DOT did a level 2 as well which I passed. Loaded to the back with produce and legal everywhere but Cali due to the length law. Dot guy said to pull into a spot and try to look busy. So we spent a couple of hours trying to move stuff but knowing it wasn't gong to happen. He walks over and says they are closing and if my trainer still had hours to do what we need to do. He leaves, 15 minutes later we're headed to NV and stop at Whiskey Pete's and make the tandems legal.

Trainer gave me a hundred bucks and told me if it's more than that to let him know. Ticket ended up being 150, but I was solo by the time I got the amount. Trainer called me up a couple weeks after going solo to check up on me and asked about the ticket. Told him it what it was and he said got a comcheck?

No CSA points and no points on license. All the company said was the trainer needs to pay for it and I told them he did.

Regarding CSA and points. It depends on how it was written up. If only the state law is listed, it will not show on your score. If "392..." is shown, it is written under FMCSA's catch-all "Failure to Obey Local Laws" and will count against you.

Read your ticket and you will see the answer.

Green, I appreciate the input, reason I scale @ 28k is I was actually over by 800lb on the drives with 1 badly loaded & already sealed trailer, ever since then I just go ahead and scale it, it gives peace of mind and I get all back in taxes anyway.
