apply for DOT # (free) and MC # ($300)

    UCR ($76 for 1 truck)

BOC3 ($30 + another $25 if want authority letter faxed/emailed not snail mail

Do in order, well at least top one. Be prepared because your phone will immediately start ringing with boc-3 companies. I found easier to do myself immediately.

Tags will be $2,000 ish first year and down payment on insurance will be usually 25-40% down (on $9,000 average).

You'll have IFTA account in home state to setup as well but that's cheap (under $50, here in Kansas at least).

You'll need to enroll in drug and alcohol testing program as well thru places like Foley.

You'll need to setup weight distance accounts in New Mexico and Kentucky as well as New York permits if going there. You'll need Oregon permits but need somebody with more knowledge than I. My trucks only went 2 trips to Oregon so we bought 10 day trip permits. Where you are neighboring Oregon you'll need the annual permit. It involves $2,000 bond.

I'm sure I missed something minor but that will get you an idea.

If you want one of the easiest routes there are companies that will do most of it for you. IF you want to do it yourself there are ALOT of steps some of which are listed in the previous posts but there are several more things you will need to do. OOIDA has a dept. that will file all or most of your authority packet stuff.

    My LIST

    DOT/MC authority
    BOC 3
    MCS 150
    MCS 90c
    UCR permit
    SCAC code- permit
Kentucky permit seperate 1/4 ly report
Oregon permit with monthly reports for first year
New York permit seperate 1/4 ly report
New Mexico permit seperate 1/4 ly report
base state IFTA account- 1/4ly reports -usually requires a bond for the first year not as expensive as Oregon bond tho
    Drug consortium
    EIN number
    Loadboard memberships
Lettering for your truck with DOT number-
if you are gong to run intrastate in some states you will need a seperate permit or certificate. ie: TX intrastate is $204.76- and your insurance company will have to send in a completed Form E
base plates / cab card for your truck and trailer
    truck and trailer annuals
    truck ins.
trailer insurance - unless you are not buying a trailer
some kind of accounting software or spreadsheet for taxes

there is more stuff to take into consideration but this is my list-
make sure you have enough operating capital to keep you going for fuel, breakdowns, etc.

good luck to you it is a lot of work BUT it can be done--- organization is the key.

    Gottfried and truckon Thank this.

Just my opinion but, I would never hire anyone to do what you are trying to do. Frankly, you would just be wasting your money! All those web sites offering to do the things that need done are just taking advantage of people. Everything from starting a company to IRP/IFTA you alone can do, just read, follow directions, submit forms and pay the fees.

As an example, Interstate Authority wants $289 to file IRP/IFTA ????? It takes less than ten minutes to fill out the forms! The Department of Revenue gives the list of required documents for proof of residency. Gather them, the forms you printed and filled out and go into the DoR and if something is amiss they will help you.

The best tip I can give is keep track of things that need renewed.

    Plus, read this
