    Good evening everyone,

I have a question and forgive me if it's been covered before.
I'm shipping a pallet of an oxidizer UN#1144. Ii is only 12 buckets & each bucket weighs 55 lbs. This will be the only thing on the truck. Does it need a placard?

    Thanks in advance

Crotonylene UN 1144 Class 3 Red Flammable diamond

UN 1144: Crotonylene - Substance information – HazMat Tool

454Kg or 1001 Pounds and above

Class 3 – Flammable and Combustible liquids – Placards and Labels according 49 CFR 173.2 – HazMat Tool

My initial decision reading this carefully across several sections for UN1144 at your weight on pallet of 55 pounds is not a bulk or sufficient for placarding when shipping on ground.

However your pallet and the boxes on it containing UN1144 should be clearly marked etc which is only logical if for whatever reason a firefighter has to go inside your trailer. Also your bills of lading will be carrying a yes under the Hazmat column.

However if this stuff ever goes onto a plane or ship etc then it may be changed to more limited and stricter packing.

This tiny shipment generates a question from me.

Why are you putting this one pallet onto a gigantic 18 wheeler? Toss it into a van and go.

Oops my bad the UN number is 1444.

Each bucket weighs 55lbs for a total pallet weight of 660lbs.

My concern is that since it is the only commodity on the truck will it need a placard. Yes each bucket is labeled as an oxidizer.
It's not going on a 18 wheeler it is going on a stake body for a inter company move.
We here were just debating whether it would need a placard or not.

Give me a minute while I hit those two linked sources to reprocess your new UN number and different class.

    ooo nice...

    Ammonium persulfate (APS)

UN 1444: Ammonium persulfate - Substance information – HazMat Tool

You do not placard truck on this one because it's still less than 1001 Pounds or 454 kg

Class 5 – Oxidizing Substances & Organic Peroxides – Placards and Labels according 49 CFR 173.2 – HazMat Tool

Review your emergency response information on this stuff. It's a really... hungry material liable to latch onto anything it meets.

I have a way of getting motivated on certain hazmat classes. Certain classes in full truckloads are a real beast to me in my history when loading at the facility dock. Another is Corrosive.

I might be better off leaving that out.

No it is under the weight limit. And it is not bulk. No need to placard until it reaches 1001 pounds.

Not worth debating, truth be told. If you’re not sure, throw a placard anyway. It’s perfectly legal to do as long as what you have showing accurately represents the cargo.

I'm guessing whoever is driving this truck doesn't have hazmat, so it's probably best not to placard something that doesn't require it.
