I Got my CDL almost 23 years ago. Different world today. I don't think the FMCSA even existed then.

It was a low level organization. Ran by the cops. Daily dues collected at random traffic stops.

Not to be a smart arse or sound condescending but you have to take the additional tests because you need to demonstrate your understanding of a passenger bus, the pre-trip is different, the skills are different, and the road test even has different parts to it. To have a P endorsement on a class A license you will do the pre-trip, skills, and road test twice, once in a class A representative vehicle and again in a bus.
When was the last time you checked the emergency exit on a tractor trailer, or inspected emergency equipment such as a pry bar? How about inspecting the seats or doing a simulated passenger pickup and discharge? Did you do a railroad crossing during your road test? All these things are done differently on a bus vs. a regular commercial vehicle.
Most school bus companies are so hard up for drivers they will train you on a bus for free, they just want you to work for a year. You could always take the training and then leave once you have some time in, or see about paying them for the training and test then drive as a sub for them in between your coach runs with Greyhound.
I hold a class A with all endorsements including passenger and school bus, got it back in 92 through a school bus contractor and was a cdl third party examiner for Pennsylvania.

Those articulated buses, although they do in fact bend in the middle are not a class A bus, only a B is required to drive them. Pennsylvania does not recognize class A buses, I have a Pennsylvania cdl A with passenger and am restricted to B&C buses only because class A buses are not legal in PA. To be a true class A bus the rear passenger compartment needs to be easily detached, just like a tractor trailer. I am not aware of any state that still has true class A buses in operation.

.... stop lumping me with Alaska76, I never said they're class A vehicles. Alaska76 did. I merely made a statement that philly has them on every corner.

I blame you @street beater , You started it.
