Which year made 2350 had carbon packing failures?
Cummings changed liner design in 2012. Then in 2015 they added carbon scraping ring to liners.

Our newest are 2014's, all the 2012's & 13's already had the issue and got new cylinder packs under warranty. We have 2 2014's that have not been done yet, but they only have about 150,000 miles on them and are starting to use more oil. They're not in the "window" for high oil consumption yet, but they will be by 200-250,000 miles, just like the rest of them. If they changed the design in 2012, it's didn't help anything.

If you do have an oil consumption problem, make sure that you tell them that you want the DPF cleaned and a copy of the flow report. Any issues with the DPF related to high oil consumption should get you a new DPF under warranty.

    Airborne and simon999 Thank this.

CAT uses CGI = CLEAN GAS INDUCTION which grabs burnt gases past the DPF and brings them back to the intake..
Isn't this Exhaust Gas Recirculation? EGR ???

No, the compression gasses are forced back into the intake system, this is what the IVAs control on an acert, they hold the intake valve open during part of the exhaust stroke.

Not exactly, the VVA's delay the closing of the intake valves, not the opening. It's actually holding them open longer during the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke. It's very complicated in the way it works, it is nothing like an EGR engine. It's more along the lines of a miller cycle than the typical otto cycle engine.

The 980K that I ran didn't have DEF. Just wanted to do a regen every 30 minutes.

Do you know if the new John Deere or Komatsu equipment has it? Seems to me that it's kind of counterproductive. Off-road diesel with DEF...of course you aren't supposed to use the red stuff anymore, but everybody still does.

Only difference between on road and off road is the dye in off road, it's hard to find anything but ULSD in this country at this time.

Case/New Holland and Massey Ferguson used DEF before, almost as soon as truck engines, with better fuel economy. John Deere has followed suit. I don't keep up with the others.
