At least in Holland and Germany (i think in all Europe by now) they are driving with black boxes in the trucks, meaning they register everything you have done in the last seven days all the time, speed you drive , engine rpm, driving time, rest time, etc, if for example you drove 15 minutes too long (looking for a parking place) on Monday in Germany and you get stop by police on Friday on Portugal, you still can get a ticket for that, other than that, every truck is governed at 80 kmh (50 mph), meaning that everyone is driving at the same speed and on main routes like crossing Germany, Belgium or France, you can see three miles long convoys of trucks driving at 80 kmh because with one or two kmh`s difference in speed in the trucks, you can`t get ahead of anyone (not w/o being 20 minutes in the maneuver occupying the left lane) and sometimes you get a prohibition of trucks driving on the two left lanes and you have to drive 30 miles behind an idiot with a flat at 30-35 mph, tha`s what you got nowadays in Europe.
Is this were not enough, a lot of trucks companies now do accept drivers from the ex iron curtain countries, drivers who take enough earning half of what you need to live in west european countries because in their (now EC) countries the life standard is 50% of any west european country, guest what had happen to the salaries of truck drivers now in West Europe?

Talking about the Cummins share of the market.....Cummins is the main manufacturer of Natural Gos engines for semi trucks if I am not mistaken. There is much talk of natural gas replacing diesel and with the re-election of Pres. Obama I can see the natural gas thing moving quickly into place in the next 5 years or so. This will help Cummins be a competitive player in the market for years to come, no need to marry up with International.

I too have been looking at buying new equipment as compared to a glider kit. It is sad that the new engines out there do not compare to the pre=egr engines, especially after having all these years to perfect them. Gone are the days of being able to order a truck with and kind of engine you want in it. Sad Sad Sad

I have about 15 12,6 l Euro 3 DAF motors in CF and XF DAF 6x4 trucks.
This is the predecessor to the 12,9l MX with out all the emission crap.
    Modifications we have.
Good water trap fuel filters on all.
Larger capacity air filters on most.
    Free flow exhausts on most.
Never had a motor fail badly except when an outside workshop force fitted a gearbox with an over length spigot shaft.
Had to do an inflame on one at about 300 000 miles because of an overheat when we lost water in the retarder and driver just kept going.
Iveco and MAN had the same issue with ZF and replaced under recall , DAF did nothing except overcharge for the replacement parts.
Truck still ran but lost compression on 2 cylinders.
Motor still looked good when opened.
We mostly do 50 000lbs to 120 000lbs loads on poor roads with these and most are around 500 000 miles.
This would be more comparable to 800 000 miles OTR as most transmissions are measuring around 1,1 million shifts by this stage.
Weak points on the motor in our operation.
Belt tension-er , replace every 150 000 miles now because we had a number fail.
Compressor head likes to carbon up if you have a leak causing it to work a bit hard over an extended period.
Besides this I can honestly say as far as power , reliability and MPG they have been very good and we have most other makes to compare them to.
I'm not sure if the emission stuff is messing the MX up for you guys but the earlier version has been good to me.
The biggest issue I have is with wiring harnesses and back up but this is a DAF issue and on another continent to you you guys.

I own a 2012 pete 367 with the mx engine. just hit 202000 miles zero problems. 7.5-8.0 mpg this engine has saved my business.a full year with no breakdowns.no cat or cummins i ever owned did that.this truck is making money 7 days a week i have a driver in it and he loves it aswell. so it isn't 1850 torque, but we were pulling 140,000 pounds with 425/1550 torque engines years ago without issues.A this in western canada where its uphill or downhill in all directions. so i will take the half gear lower on the hill and the so far excellent reliability of the mx compared to the choices available.and the next truck will have the recently available 500/1850 torque mx that is now available.in 2 or 3 years once they work out any bugs that may come up.
