Packing List for Students

wow who do u work for ? hope i dont get a trainer like you threatning to leave items on the curb,we would have a very very serious problem

 

Well it is his truck, and he makes the rules. I for one am glad to hear what to bring and what not to bring. It will be 5 weeks till I get with a trainer (maybe 6 or 7) and want to be sure we start out on the right foot. I probably wont have the money for all the rule books, maps and what not. I will have my laptop with me, and the bag i put it in. Much smaller than a briefcase (which ill put in my own truck), and have two duffle bags, one for clean and one for dirty. and a small bag for shampoo, hair brush, toothpaste, etc. Also, will have my log books in my laptop bag. I am big enough to take up plenty of room just myself, i dont need to bring crap with me, that will already be in the truck. Crock pot with food in it? an inverter? would you bring a whole bunch of crap with you, if you were staying with family, when you KNOW there isnt much room for everything?? You expect family to just pack their stuff away to make room for your things?? No, because you are a guest in their house. Same goes for you being a guest in the trainers truck.

 

The rule books the company should give you.
The laminated atlas you can buy one of those at the p lot for 20 bucks if you have the coupon out of their free magazine.
you should also get a truckstop guide it will be aprox 15.00 for one of those. It is priceless if you are in an area that you do not know. There are truckstops in some areas that you may not see from the interstate.
Log book most companies give them to you with all the company info printed on them.
Most companies will tell you no laptops but I brought mine and it was goo that I did I was stuck on the truck for a while with the trainer because I failed my solo out tests 2 times the second time I should of been sent home but luckly my trainer talked to his boss and was able to get me a third try. Also was not hitting the terminals on the right days to be solo'd out was allways hitting the terminals on weekends when the saftey guy's were not there.
I had to pay bill while I was out so it is always good to have a laptop.

 

What are the legal ramifications of bring propane cylinder for cooking when stopped - i have one similar to this http://www.rei.com/product/643058 - saves money we climbers try to eat cheap - this is more for when i have my own truck but couldnt find a similar thread but at the same time when starting out saving money is important

the things work wonderful you can cook just about anything on it and the design is perfect for a cheap quick hot meal

 

Best thing one can do as a trucker, new or old, is living as cheap as you can. If that means PB&Js a few times a week, or roast beef, or if you aer lucky enough to have a microwave, eating Chef Boy-r-dee, or a microwave pizza. Now the occasional McDonalds or homemade dinner is fine, but I just hope that I can eat properly (lay off the Little Debbie and Hostess).

As far as whether or not i can bring my laptop or not, sorry, it is a tool i will use to plot a route from point A and B. Not to mention I will use it to help my log books. Oh, and watch DVDs and browse the web on it....

 

I've got a backpacking stove to heat up water. Does good for mac and cheese and instant coffee and such. Any problems with carrying something lie that?

 

Even if you're parked. Like at a rest area?

 

I have heard of truck drivers using bbq grills they do not get in trouble for that or just never caught.

 

I would not see a problem myself with it at a rest area or truck stop. I think the problem is when you try to use it inside the truck.

Just thought of this, could be a problem with a hazmat load.
