I need to remove some painted on lettering from a truck. I've heard oven cleaner works but what's the method? I don't want to ruin the paint and don't mind if I have to buff it afterwards...

Color sand it with some 1200 grit paper then some rubbing compound..

apply the oven cleaner to the paint and let it soften up the paint then use an old credit card to scrape it off. probably have to buff it out after. you will still have a ghost image probably where the lettering was unless you do like ken says and color sand.

Uh, won't any kind of chemical cleaner also remove the underlying body color paint?
I gotta go with ken, sand the letters and the surrounding area lightly until removed and them buff out. -
the automotive paint has hardeners in it, wont be affected by oven cleaner unless you leave it on for hours.....the lettering enamel dosnt. prolly "one-shot" lettering enamel.
misterG Thanks this. -
yeah we have done the oven cleaner deal many times and it works great. very cheap too. a friend of mine who went to school for auto painting and such told me about it. never had any trouble. the sun fades the paint around the lettering so u will see where it was but some sanding and or buffing should resolve that.
